In my game last night, my ally declared war on a country that I have a truce with and they called me to arms... my options were:

Accept: -2 Stab for breaking truce
Decline: -25 Prestige

I don't think there should be an unavoidable negative hit for simply being someone's ally.

Sort of like the original launch game when you used to be auto-sucked into huge losing wars, forced to take control, then having to give up all of your lands, vassals and money, just because you allied with someone weaker than you.

When I started the game I hated that mechanic too. I started with a nation that no prestige to speak of (Byzantium) and I had Hungary always try to drag me into a war or another (as If I had an army).

But in all honesty if you have an Alliance which you wont honour and expect only your ally to help you it should cost you something. In all honesty the prestige loss is negligible, as the game progresses barring events it should not prove difficult to keep at max most of the time. As it is now you can simply refuse any call to war, sent a diplomat remend the alliance and then call them to war to help you, its quite abusable IMHO.

I am playing a mostly political game so the prestige loss is a KILLER for me, especially since you lose so much prestige naturally every year. I would prefer the -3 stab hit.

The only wars I fight in my current campaign are calls to arms and I never reject them, even if it's hopeless. Seeing how far diplomacy gets me! haha.
