Play as a Theocracy:
* Expand your theological school spreading its influence on the world (being adopted by others Temples and Nobles).
* Every theological branch has its own benefits and disadvantages.
* Create your own theological school or reach the leadership of a existing one.
* As a theocracy you have to oppose the others noble and merchant families to become or control the new Pope.
* Deal with the Papacy or your Liege to accept your choosen successor.
* A pope powerful enough can turn a theological school illegal, turning it into a new heresy, and sometimes this will turn into a religious war.
* Every theological school has a centralized comand in the form of a Monastic Order, and it receives part of the religous tax of their faithful followers.

Play as a Holy Order:
*Try to invite others nobles to fight for your Order.
*Compete with the others Orders to receive more attention from your religious head.
*Improve your order and manage your power as the leader.
*Put your own puppet on Rome, and become the leader of all Christendom.

This game is about dynasties, and it should stay that way. Thus, as interesting as it would be to play as a bishop or grandmaster, I still think it shouldn't be in.

On the other hand, I do believe religious characters need some fleshing out, viz:

More active Pope, cardinals and local bishops.
Monasteries as a holding type.
Abbesses, not just abbots.
Game-shaking events to represent the sway held by the likes of St. Bernard of Clairvaux or St. Hildegard of Bingen.

I like the dynasty form of the game, but at the same time I feel that every government form and religion should be playable. Basically: if a ruler could actually become a meaningful force in the world, I'd like an opportunity to play as them. This includes theocracies (and non-trade republics, but that's another topic entirely).

A dynasty-like model is possible for theocracies, it just might take a little creativity. For example: the "dynasty" of a theocracy or holy order could be their theological school. New members to the "dynasty" couldn't (or perhaps shouldn't) be attained by reproduction, but rather by recruits (the mechanics for which would need to be fleshed out).

It'd take some doing, but I think it's possible while still staying loyal to the concept of the game.

Maybe without dynasty score. Or maybe like playing in those situations when you know it's gonna be game over soon anyway. I sometimes play single lifetimes without being interested in following up as the heirs of the guy I played. I guess I might as well play as a Templar GM or someone like that.

I am in favor of religious dlc. Also Christian priests should have wives, because the celibacy became obligatory for catholic priests in XI century, orthodox priests should have the possibility to marry in the entire period.

The Great Schism should be introduced in the CK2, through events, decisions or a tension system that will harm the relation between pope and patriarch. The pope and patriarch should fight religious sphere of influence through Christian Europe and Pagan Europe
