IMO get a country that will let you make mistakes without getting your ass completely kicked (at least, that's my experience with patched HoI2 where AI was alright). USA sounds good from that perspective.
The problem with minors is that although you have less to do, you'll have a harder time doing it (when a major comes to bring you down).
