Chapter 4 - A New Era

Chapter 4 - A New Era

“Following the conclusion of the Zapotec war, Huitzilihuitl set out to recover his war exhausted people and rebuild the military and finances of the empire.

He made a determined effort to improve postwar relations with the Mayans, with little success. He remained suspicious of their future intentions. The tensions developed into a behind the scenes arms race between the two nations, with both sides dealing cordially with each other during meetings while simultaneously investing in expanding the army should relations go sour.

Huitzilihuitl oversaw the regaining of stability in the empire as well as watching over provinces with large populations of Zapotec Nationalists.

A large part of the Emperor’s duties involved dealing with his vassal, the still reigning King Zaachilla II. Oddly enough, despite the brutal war between the two rulers, Zaachilla and Huitzilihuitl held no grudges against each other. In fact, over the immediate years after the war, the two leaders by all accounts became good friends with one another. Both rulers were growing old, and together they reminisced times passed. As one of Huitzilihuitl’s top advisors said, ‘Zaachilla II approached our Emperor with all the delicacy and humility of a leader of a defeated people’. Zaachilla assured Huitzilihuitl that he would work vigorously for the Aztec cause.

Then on September 25, 1405, The Emperor Huitzilihuitl died quietly in Tenochtitlan. He was always remembered by his people as the ruler who set the Aztecs on the path to greatness and gave them hope and confidence.
The Aztec elders got together and discussed who would succeed him.

On September 27, they chose Moctezuma I as the new Emperor of the Aztecs. A nephew of Huitzilihuitl and a veteran of the Zapotec war, Moctezuma I was intelligent, chivalrous and responsible, despite his relatively young age. He was well received by his people as the new emperor, and he had to do little to convince the people of his competence.

One of the earliest and most notable of Moctezuma’s accomplishments was the restructuring of the Aztec forces, as well as bolstering the ranks of the 3 noble orders of knights, The Jaguar, Eagle, and Arrow knights.

He oversaw the transition of the Aztec military from a conscripted mass raised only during wartime to a fully functioning and full time standing professional army.

Like his predecessor, Moctezuma I attempted to revive relations with the Mayans, and also like his predecessor, he failed to do so.

When the Mayans sent a message to Moctezuma warning him not to expand his borders any further, the Emperor was outraged. As Mayan troops began to mount on his border, he knew he had to act. He would take a page out of his predecessor’s book and launch a preemptive war.

Once again the fire atop the temple in Tenochtitlan was lit, and the Mayan war had begun….”

Chapter 5 - Hegemony

Chapter 5 - Hegemony

“The Aztecs were much better prepared for the Mayan war than they had been for the war against the Zapoteca. Zaachilla II happily voiced his support for the war, and began assembling a modest force of Zapoteca to aid the Aztec war effort.

Moctezuma’s first move was to march his forces south and seize Tlapanec, effectively putting the Mayans well out of the range of Tenochtitlan. He then combined his own army with reinforcements from Tenochtitlan and marched east to confront the true strength of the Mayan Kingdoms.

tlapanecseized.jpg

The two armies clashed in the province of Zapotec, previously owned by Zaachilla II. As the army entered the province, the Zapotec forces linked up with the Aztecs. Zaachilla II approached Moctezuma, and, to the surprise of all present, he requested that he personally plan the battle and lead his Zapoteca into the fray ahead of the Aztecs.

He claimed he knew much about the area, and he wished that he could lead the Zapoteca to victory one last time. Moctezuma I’s advisors were suspicious, but the emperor decided to grant the old King’s request.
The jungle in the region was so dense, that different segments of the army often wandered out of formation or lost track of each other.

One Jaguar Knight, named Chimali, recounted his experience:
‘We crept our way slowly through the jungle, unsure of the enemy’s whereabouts. Unknown to either us or the Maya at the time, the Mayan army was apparently approaching us directly from the other direction. The two armies were on top of each other before they were even aware of each other’s presence. Some parts of the armies even overlapped each other. I was picking my way through the thick foliage when I bumped into something with my left shoulder. At first I had suspected I had run into a large tree or a boulder, but when I turned I found myself face to face with a Mayan warrior. We were both startled by the incident and for a moment we stared at one another, dumbfounded. After a few seconds of confusion, however, I reached for my maquahuitl, the obsidian bladed war club traditionally used by the Jaguar knights. He hadn’t time to ready his own spear, so before I could brandish my blade, he lunged forward and tackled me to the ground. We wrestled on the mud jungle floor for what seemed an eternity before I finally managed to loose my obsidian dagger and plunged it into the Mayan’s chest. The Mayan somehow found the strength to continue struggling, but after stabbing him a few more times, he finally lay still. The struggle had disoriented me, but fortunately could hear loud war cries not far from my location from a skirmish that was taking place nearby, and following the noise I was able to reunite with my fellow Aztecs.’

battleofZapotec.jpg

Much of the battle was fought through a series of similar close quarter skirmishes, and over time it became apparent that the Aztec and Zapotec forces were winning the engagement. The main body of the Aztec army found a clearing, and lit a fire their to signal other regiments that had lost their way. The army managed to regroup and after a short rest they continued their eastward march, pursuing the fleeing Mayans.

One regiment detached from the rest of the army and went north then east seizing all of the Yucatan shoreline. The Main Aztec army arrived at the Mayan capital and after a short siege, the capital fell. The Mayan empire was annexed into the Aztec Triple Alliance. Moctezuma I was the ruler of the civilized one world.”

Well i've reached the point where things are going to slow down considerably until the euros start arriving. The next few updates are probably going to be mainly narrative and farther part in terms of the in game date. I can't really expand much because I need to get to level 4 government, and i'm not supposed to reach level one until around the year 2400 or so :p . Once the Euros come (and I possibly westernize? Who knows) things will pick up again.

Just hope that a Spane, or Portugal most likely set up a colony next to you :) early, also dont forget your sliders, the good thing about not being able to expand anymore atm is that your Policy slider time for moving every few decades wont go up anymore for the time being especialy when youve Westernised itll be handy :) one hopes anyway.

Well done, now that you are the sole power of Mesoamerica, it's time to strengthen your position in the rest of the continent before the Europeans decide to show up.

1) Colonize/claim what you can

2) Try to make contact with (and absorb) the other AmerIndian civilizations, especially the Inka and Cherokee (as the latter border so many others!)

3) Tech race!

4) Build some land forces ASAP

5) Slowly work towards building a navy

If I were you my goal would be domination of the Western Hemisphere by 1600 with the eventualy goal of at least one territory on the Iberian peninsula just for sits and giggles.

Guys, he can't colonise because he has no colonists. He can't raise even one tech level until he westernises, since they all have predicted dates of the year 2000+, this also means no quest for the new world, since you need trade tech 7 and government tech 4, so no exploring.

Native Americans have been horribly, horribly nerfed in IN. He has to wait and hope that one of the uncolonised provinces he can see gets colonised soon by Portugal or Castille. Then he has to hope he gets a good enough leader along with the right slider settings, which will take ages to get to (Aztecs start off full narrowminded and decentralised I think).

Then there's the incredibly strong latin rebels that will start appearing everytime one of the Aztec leaders die.

I'm hoping you manage this Fidosim, since you're a good writer and you know your stuff. You have a decent chance if you manage to survive long enough to westernise, but it's incredibly difficult (I don't want to say impossible in case I'm proved wrong).

Well you've got my situation down. Apparently Paradox didn't think the natives had it bad enough before. :( . But i'm still going. Major updates coming soon.
