SUENIK THE BELEAGUERED
CHAPTER 44 - A MOSTLY QUIET YEAR
(1145-1146)
Everything starts off swimmingly. My steward proves that she is worth her weight in gold - quite literally.
The thought of all that lovely gold glittering away in my coffers puts me in a wonderful mood. My wife remarks that she's not seen me this happy since I last hung a batch of traitors in Constantinople.
She's probably right.
Someone else who has cheered up considerably is Ruben, mad uncle Kriokor's supposedly dark messiah.
Realising that he wasn't destined to crush the kingdoms of men beneath his heels was probably what did it.
Sadly for them, the good people of Al Jazira threaten to spoil my mood by rising up, making a lot of noise and generally burning buildings that I'd rather were left standing.
Any guesses as to how I dealt with them?
In fact, for good measure I round up some more riff-raff and the Suenikian gallows construction guild gets another round of lucrative contracts.
This feels almost as good as all of the gold I've just been given.
Almost.
Anyway, for those of you who haven't met him before, here is my son - Krikor.
All things being good he'll one day be crowned Krikor II, although I'm distrubed to see that already he's behaving a little bit irrationally - a little bit like his namesake in fact... I'll keep a close watch on him.
To make life a bit more bearable for my overly serious son I arrange a marriage for him with this foxy little
gurgan.
This seems to help a lot, because within pico-seconds she's up the duff.
Well done son. You're a man now.
In celebration I decide to shower some responsability upon him by handing out some land and the traditional Crown Prince's title.
He also gets a sister too.
It's then my turn to have gifts bestowed upon me. The good people of Constantinople first of all clean up all of the mess they've made...
...and then show me a little something that they've built.
You have to realise that I grew up in land-locked Suenik. Anything larger than a fishing boat seems unnatural and scary to me. Still, I smile and say thank you. At least they're not rebelling, eh?
Everything is going well. Can you believe it? A whole chapter without any petty wars, random marauding arabs or disobediant vassals.
I think I might take the time to sit, back relax and...
They never learn do they? That does it! I'm not even going to dignify this disobediance with an update. Instead all I'll say is this...
Order is restored.
Now - how shall we spend that gold?
Can Aboulgharib have a chapter without a war? Will the gold be spent wisely? Will The List be brought out soon? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of Suenik - Land of the Beleaguered!
