SUENIK THE BELEAGUERED
CHAPTER 42 - A RETURN TO ORDER
(1143-1144)
The Sheik of Gilan and his master, the Emir of Mazandaran, are in for a nasty shock. My forces, freed from their pointless conflict with the Egyptians, turn and make haste towards their new targets.
The Sheik proves himself to be an eminently sensible man, and begs for mercy...
However, I do not want simply his money. I want his loyalty and his service.
And I shall have it.
The Emir proves more stubborn. Having taken Tabriz from my foolish, French vassal his forces dig in around the fortress and prepare to meet my armies in battle. My troops, exhausted from their long marches across the Empire do not fare well!
I order an immediate retreat and regrouping. My generals listen to my advice and form several grand armies, one of which meets the Emir's forces head on after a suitable rest.
My Arab foe shows some good common-sense and his forces effect an orderly withdrawl rather than standing around to be slaughtered.
Elsewhere one of my vassals is extremely pleased with my tenure as king, citing me as the best ruler that Suenik has ever had.
Let's be honest - I'm not facing much competition am I? Still the sentiment is nice.
Cheeky little whelp.
Bloody brat has it easy - I set it all up for him!
Yeah, but he's not lying dead in a ditch yet is he?
There's plenty of time for that!
The citizens of Constantinople surprise me. Instead of whining and setting fire to things they come to me with a forgotten masterpiece.
Of course, this could simply be an attempt at recompense for all the trouble they have caused and I sense that certain liberties have been taken with the translation. Although I'm no scholar of the classics I'm pretty sure that "Aboulgharibeus the Brave" was never a Greek hero.
My grand army finally reaches Tabriz and the Emir's forces are swept aside in one of the bloodiest battles the region has ever seen.
After a short siege my forces reclaim the province in the name of the Empire.
It then strikes me that since I'm mopping up the extremities of my Empire, I should probably do something about Azerbaijan. It has sat there on the map like an ugly wine stain for long enough. I have one of the court painters paint it blue and I send a declaration of war to the Shiek.
He protests, claiming that he is a man of peace - his lack of an army being proof of that. I respond that this clear display of weakness makes him unfit to rule and that his people need a good, strong monarch to govern them.
Realising the wisdom of my words he capitulates before my forces can even turn their attention towards him.
Poor fool. Perhaps his people will now prosper under my rule instead of languishing in the shadow of fear?
A young man shows up at my court, claiming to be more capable than my marshal.
I give him the chance to prove his worth. After all, my marshal did lead my men to a mass slaughter earlier...
Suenik also receives a sign of the Lord's favour when a miracle is worked upon one of our people.
Ghazi, the former King of Nubia, is healed of his ailments!
I celebrate this return to health by ordering him to lead a force against the county of Albania. My former vassal assumed that with all the fighting going on down south that he could have his independance.
He does a fine job, and I reward him by making him the new Count of Albania.
Certainly not as grand as being a King, but if he proves himself here great things could beckon.
The war in the south has now been wound up.
I let the Shiek of Gilan join the Empire...
...and I snuff out the Emir of Mazandaran's line.
Perhaps now we can have peace?
Will peace ever come to Suenik? Will Ghazi prosper as Count of Albania? How will the Shiek of Gilan take to his new calling? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of Suenik - Land of the Beleaguered!
