I have a problem. I gave a title of a mayor to my son (I am king of Sicily) and when he is taking over the country after death of my former main character, the government type changes to republic and he becomes the Doge. This brings the issue of later succession as in the republic the heir is elected and that rules my dynasty out of the heritage. What should I do? Apart from not giving him this title in the first place.

The same thing just happened to me. I named one of my sons the Mayor of a city, not thinking much about it. Later, I also gave him one of my counties as my demesne was growing too big, which turned said county into a city-state, too (and gave him the title of Lord-Mayor)! I then hoped that once he would inherit my other titles, the succession laws of my main holdings would override his, but this hope proved to be futile. It was here that I got a game over, for this son of mine was already sixty years old and incapable by the time he took over, and unable to change the succession laws because most of my vassals hated him. I tried changing the capital back to my original one, declaring it the primary title as well, but the succession laws of his city-state stuck.
