Hi,

In a game as Portugal I have established tradeposts in most of South America, but for some reason I can only change coastal provinces to real colonies. How come?

I am sure that I am missing something quite basic, but I just cannot seem to figure out what the deal is.

Thanks,

EoE

Hmmm sounds like a well known thing! You can only build colonies in coast provinces, or provinces (if they don't have access to the ocean ) that are neighborprovince to colonie with 700 inhabitants.

What I noticed it this, though: If You already have a certain number of gold provinces in the Americas, You cannot develop further ones into colonies (option is suddenly greyed out). This is maybe an intended feature, but is it documented?

As Portugal I couldn´t in America. At one point there were several gold provinces left and when I chose to colonise one of them, the others became greyed out for colonists. But I still could colonise a gold province in Siberia (yes, You´ve read that correctly :D)

I am not sure, that you are right here. I had no trouble building colonies in provinces surrounded by trade posts, when I played Russia.

That is EXACTLY what happened. But even before I annexed the Aztecs, the option greyed out.

I am not sure though, that it happens because it is a gold province. I am not able to upgrade other provinces from trade posts to colonies either.

Are these provinces adjacent to a colony? I remember having a similar problem from my very first GC with that one land-locked gold producing province near Guyana; I had to develop the nearby coastal province into a town before I could colonize the inland goldmines.

You're really a lucky man, last time i was russia, i had to make all the way through that sibirian corridor, tradepost after tradepost, until i reached the pacific, so that i could start to colonize form both sides. :(

The provinces ARE adjacent to a colony. And I am having problems with that exact same gold producing province near Guyana. Maybe I should develop the coastal province until it is above the 600 people population limit and moves to 'city' status?

Weird. I played with the 1.05 patch. I established tradeposts all the way through the corridor, and colonies in the gold producing provinces.

Right now this tread to me seems filled with halfwrong and conflicting statments.
In my experience this is how it works.

To build a colony it has to be either

a) Next to the coastline
b) Next to one of your citys (700+ pop)
c) In special locations, like the shores around the Greate Lakes in N America.

If anyone has an example where this does not hold up, please post it. Otherwise stop confusing everyone will you =)

I am not trying to confuse anyone. I am just fairly certain, that I when I build tradeposts along the Siberian corridor, I hate no trouble upgrading tradeposts to colonies at will. The did not have to be next to existing colonies, and they certainly did not have to be near the coastline.

The Emperor is right on this one. When colonising 'inland' it´s not necessary to already have a colony or city in the neighborhood. A trading-post suffices. E.g. as Portugal, advancing into Siberia from the East (i.e. the pacific coast), I once built a chain of tradeposts up to Ulan Ude. I then upgraded the trading post in Ulan Ude to a colony without any further ado. This should settle the issue, I think.

Ok, so since I cannot upgrade my trade posts in South America we have either a bug or an undocumented feature. Or maybe the ability to colonise provinces is related to the infrastructure level? (Just a wild guess).

Siberia is different..

But in america/africa you can only colonise inland provinces adjacent to a city.

As the option is greyed out only after having a certain number of gold colonies already, I tend to think it´s an undocumented feature preventing You to get 'too rich'. And if it´s true, that only Portugal and Spain are concerned, then maybe because they are the only ones likely to get this much...

Maybe Johan or Greven knows? *hint, hint*
