I recently discovered the worst way of losing territory, in my current save as the carpathian empire. Seniority succession somewhere else on the map.
Because I am playing an Avar dynasty, there isn't a lot of families, so most dukes are divided into two different families. A few centuries ago, an adventurer from one of the two families, conquered Anatolia, and it has been an independent kingdom ever since.
And a few decades ago, they decided to go with seniority succession. And when the king died, the oldest member of the family inherited the kingdom. Except he was my most powerful Duke, and even though I had max crown authority at every level... He became the independent King of Anatolia, taking with him one fifth of my kingdom.
When I discovered the problem, I quickly became aware that the next heir, was an other Duke of mine.
The only efficient solution that I found, was to conquer Anatolia, take the crown for myself, and destroy it...
I must say, it is the most frustrating way of losing territory, I've never seen.
