I play as Norway, and have both an alliance and RM with Muscovy. Sweden has neither of these things, yet on Muscovite monarch death, the succession war is between me and Sweden. Explain me the logic behind the Swedish claim on the Muscovite throne.

Please tell me the tooltip lies.

The tooltip doesn't lie, however I assume Sweden has set you as a rival and as such they will oppose you getting bigger/stronger than them with the PU on Muscowy.
You will be the defender in the succession war, meaning Sweden has to take Moscow to get ticking warscore, which should be hard enough for them so that you win that war. :)

edit: They don't have a claim on Muscowy, I assume, they only oppose you who does. I experienced this situation as the "victim": I had a RM and alliance with Castille as Portugal, but on my monarch death, without an heir, it triggered a succession war between Castille and France, as Castille was France's rival. Let's say that the Portuguese land forces used this time to proper enjoy the holiday season on Ceuta's beaches until earing devastated that Castille's forces had been crushed. ;)

Or you have set Sweden as Rival. Unrival them and the tooltip will change and they won't oppose.

I don't like this current "rival to contest succession" mechanism. I feel like it's a cheap quick fix to spice things up. At least raise the minimum requirement something to more than just rivaling whoever's ending up with the PU! Royal marriage, positive opinion, alliance, anything.

I like it a lot on the other hand. PU between two major powers like France and Muscovy or Sweden and Muscovy greatly unbalance the game. So them being cut off at the start is immensely important.

It would be better to just disallow such unions in the first place instead of this hack.

And I don't like it. Sweden does not have claim on the throne, and I hope they're not able to actually get Muscovy in PU after such a war. I can understand them opposing it, and going to war over it, but getting a country in PU because someone -else- was supposed to get it is silly.

So is getting 400%+ warscore in 1 war, which is otherwise impossible, and having it largely being up to luck. I don't mind the rival succession war system because it at least allows a bit more decision-based influence on something that is sorely lacking it.

If the country opposing a PU wins it gets the PU instead so basically everyone else is still screwed though. I once had a game where I contested and got aragon in a PU as france by beating castile black and blue. Sadly the game bugged out when I could no longer patrol the Western Europe Trade node after I finished integrating aragon.

Yeah, it would be better if the victory of the opposer would lead to the end of the union, instead of just another PU.
Still, I like this system better than if there would be no PUs. Makes the game more interesting and dynamic.

PU does not need to regress to being *more* luck-based and *more* Euro-centered than they already are. The rival mechanic was a good change precisely because it adds a bit of strategy and power projection control into an otherwise luck dominant mechanic...and a luck mechanic with HUGE payouts.
