I started as Earl Osulf and immediately went a-searching for a wife. I found Princess Adelheid quickly enough and decided for fun I'll marry her, even though it seems it shouldn't be likely. Soon enough we made some babehs and she became Baroness of Franconia. My firstborn son became the successor of the Duchy of Franconia.

However, my heir, my firstborn daughter, died after being killed by Bandit scum and next in line for my titles was my cousins daughter. I'm a bit confused as to what happened at this point. I had changed my succession law to Primo in the hopes it would make my firstborn son my heir (as he had some lovely titles coming to him from my marriage), however, I was stuck with my cousins daughter. Being a loving family man, I sent my best assassin to visit my heir's chambers and she soon (after a few failed attempts) slept soundly forever. But instead of my succession changing to my own family, it went to my cousin's second daughter. Once I killed her off it said I had no heir's left!

I checked my son's name, thinking I accidentally a matrilineal marriage but he was still of my dynasty. So I was left with a son that was successor to the Duchy of Franconia but that was not my heir. Is this because the Princess of the HRE was too good for me? Does her status and titles force my son into her family?

I'm still a bit confused on titles, succession and the like, so I appreciate any information.

Cheers!

I think something similar happened to me... As the Duke of Lombardia I married my first-born son (and heir thanks to primo) to the Duchess of Toscana. He was still my heir for a while, then all of a sudden he's removed from the line of succession and my second son, who has no titles and is a bit crap, is suddenly my heir. Few years down the line I die, instead of any of my sons inheriting I'm suddenly playing as the son of my first-born. His father was still alive as the Duke of Toscana (although only in title), but it skipped him and went straight to his son. Being heir to the Duchy of Toscana I didn't complain, but it did seem a bit odd.

Were any of these individuals excommunicated or bastards? Or bishops? As far as I can tell those things can all exclude you from the line of succession.

Was the crown law in England set to "high"? Then stuff can't leave the kingdom on inheritance, so it can't go to the Duke of Franconia? This could block the first-born to become earl, as he is destined to become duke?

I do not believe so. My cousin was a regular Earl of a Scottish county, and I was a rather fat and lazy regular Earl of England.

That actually might have been it. I believe the King of England passed the High Crown Law before all of this went down. That would make sense, if my son is then in line for a Duchy in the HRE and can't be both. I'll try to replicate this again. I've been playing a lot of games with the HRE so I was unfamiliar with what the Crown Law stuff did, as the HRE was normally low.

Thanks!

Hm, that explanation makes sense, but it would be cool if somehow there was a way for someone to have holdings in two separate kingdoms/empires at the same time. I'd bet there are examples of that in history, although I can't think of any off the top of my head (I'm not counting the Norman kings of England because that seems quite different). Maybe it'll be added later. At the very least, maybe you should have some way to choose which title you want your son to inherit (i.e., which you'd rather play)?

Something similar happened here when the second in line (daughter) was the heir. She had 2 children. As soon as the first in line, a son, had children of his own the primogeniture succession switched to him.
