There was a very good and interesting papal one, so I guess we're the second as far as I know. Still a very elite club :D.

This is my first AAR ever so it won't be very good, just a history book style summary of important events. I played VH/W.

1045 Count Eudes de Vermandois dies, his eldest son Herbert becomes count.

March 9 1067 Herbert is promoted to Duke, giving him overlordship over Raoul de Valois Count of Amiens and Vexin.

September 23 1072 The Pope calls the First Crusade, encouraging all Catholics to embark on a Holy War to free Jerusalem from the heathen Saracens.

January 1075 Duke Herbert takes advantage of the Franco-Germanic War to press his claims in Hainaut and evict his bitter rival Baudoin the Younger de Flandre, who is later installed in Artois by his father Baudoin the Elder.

March 1075 Hainaut is added to the Vermandois demesne.

April 1075 Duke Herbert makes peace with the German Emperor.

May 1075 Eudes the Younger, son of Herbert, is installed as count of Hainaut, with Eudes the Elder, younger brother of Herbert, taking over his duties as marshall of Vermandois.

1077 Duke Herbert, tired of King Phillipe's tyrannous ways, starts considering himself to be a much better candidate for the French crown. He is, after all, a descendant of Charlemagne, is he not?

November 1080 the Crusade finally gains momentum as the Kingdom of France prepares a Host with the aim of reclaiming the Holy Land.

March 1081 Duke Herbert takes up the cross and marches towards Jerusalem, directing his vassals to gather their armies near Montpellier.

January 1082 The Vermandois host, having left Montpellier a few months earlier, encounters bad weather and makes landfall on the coast of Northern Africa. After having defeated the hostile Tripolitanian army they reach Tripolitana and begin the siege.

March 14 1082 Tripolitana falls. A small contingent of knights is left behind to hold the town, while the rest sails on towards Palestine.

April 16 1082 An alliance is formed with the young King of Croatia, a fellow Catholic ruler who Duke Herbert hopes will support him both in the Crusade and, eventually, in his bid to claim the crown of France.

September 15 1082 The Host makes landfall in Acre.

November 9 1082 Acre falls and is sacked by the Crusaders.

September 19 1083 Marshall Eudes the Elder dies in the siege of Hama. The armies of Vermandois are temporarily under Duke Herbert's personal command, as no suitable replacement can currently be found.

November 30 1083 Cowardly King Philippe signs a peace treaty with the Caliph of Egypt and recalls all his armies, for now ending Duke Herbert's involvement in the Crusade. Apart from the Vermandois conquests, no French nobles have achieved anything in the Crusade. Duke Herbert blames this on the King's inept leadership, while factually the Catholics were just not ready to face the united might of the Fatimid Caliphate in its zenith. While Alexandria is in Pisan hands and the Papal Legion occupies a small strip of land in Egypt proper, no other gains were made by christendom.

January 11 1086 After Papal dispensation was acquired, the Bishopric of Tripolitana is established in order to more efficiently administer the faraway province and convert the population.

January 23 1086 The Papal occupation of Manupura ends, leaving Alexandria and Acre the only two cities in Egypt and the Holy Land that are in Christian hands.

January 26 1087 With blessings from the Pope and Duke Herbert, the Order of the Knights of Saint John, better known as the Hospitaliers Order, is established by knights errant who wish to fight to free the Holy Land. The castles around Acre and command of the city and harbour are turned over to the Grandmaster of the Order.

November 1 1090 After a few uneventful years, the debt from Herbert's adventure in the Holy Land is finally paid back. Vermandois is solvent again.

February 25 1091 Duchess Adèle de Valois, beloved wife of Duke Herbert, dies aged 51. Duke Herbert goes into mourning, vowing not to remarry and to join her soon in Heaven.

May 1091 Count Raoul de Valois, father in law of Duke Herbert, dies at the blessed age of 70. He leaves his county of Amiens to his grandson Count Eudes de Vermandois, who bestowes it onto his own son. The county of Vexin goes to Raoul's son Robert.

November 25 1092 Duke Herbert de Vermandois dies at the ripe old age of 61, leaving his Duchy and the ancestral homelands of the Vermandois to his eldest son, who will now become Eudes de Vermandois, Duke of Valois and Count of Vermandois and Hainaut.

I'm not done with my game yet, I just have alot of pictures and a decent story and style in my head. I take it I won't be living much longer, but here we go :).

The reign of Eudes I, second Duke of Valois

screensave0.png

At the death of Herbert IV of Vermandois, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Eudes. Eudes was known primarily as a pragmatic man, though many believed he was this way not due to any innate wisdom or skill of mind, but his own cowardice and talent for avoiding danger and or harm.

Though many may call him a coward, he was known by none to be lazy, rather the opposite, a hard working man who put his domains and duty to his family, the true heirs of Charlemagne, before his own personal pleasure.

screensave1.png

Eudes begins his reign by sending gifts of gold to his most loyal and beloved vassals. Unfortunately, this means only the Bishop of Tripoli receives payment, for the count of Vexin and Eudes did not make great friends.

screensave2.png

The death of Herbert had other repercussions, such as the righteous fatherly guidance he bestowed upon young Antoine. Antoine would now either have to look to his brother Eudes, or himself for guidance. He seemingly chose the latter.

screensave3.png

But there were other issues more pressing to the Duke. The Duke hated his liege, just as his father did. It was insulting that these usurping Mayors thought they had any right to the throne of Charles the Great, let alone order the legitimate and senior heirs to this glorious man to join his crusade. Some say it was yet another showing of the cowardice of Eudes, others say that it was the perfect excuse for Eudes to betray his liege. Whatever the reason, he indeed betrayed Philippe Ier. Not only this, but he was intent on joining the King of England, thus cutting off the Duke of Flanders from the King of France.

screensave6.png

Eudes was strongly taken by Mathilde, a close relative. As chancellor, she was instrumental in these dealings.

screensave7v.png

It wasn't long after this time that Eudes earned himself another enemy: The eldest son and heir of the King of France, Guillaume.

scaled.php

The King of England accepts the Duke of Vermandois into his realm. The treachery of Eudes is complete.

screensave10.png

Feeling not so secure even after coming under England's protection, Eudes begins ordering extensive fortification. Activities such as this would continue throughout Eudes' reign.

screensave11.png

Eudes, tired of Roberts continued disloyalty and his claims to the titles of Amiens and Valois, declares a preemptive war against the son of Raoul.

screensave12.png

The siege was quick and successful, and soon after Vexin was added to the Dukes demesne.

screensave15.png

The rebellious Eudes no longer had a cause or person to fight against, so he committed himself loyally to his new liege.

screensave16.png

However; Eudes as always prided himself on his flexibility, so thus he had no desire to commit himself truly to his new liege.

screensave17.png

Eudes hoped his heirs would have no desire to return to France, except as its divinely anointed King.

scaled.php

Eudes marries his true love, Mathilde, off to William the Conqurer's bastard son.

screensave23.png

Eudes' improvements across his realm has a positive effect on the local economies, despite the tension brewing amongst the kingdoms of England and France.

screensave24.png

When things seemed to be going fantastic for Eudes', Gods wrath struck him down. Robert, King of England, not trusting a man as treacherous and deceitful as Eudes, decided to attempt to annex the realms for himself, and to split the titles amongst his sons and friends.

screensave25.png

Eudes, in desperation, begged the King of France to accept him back into the realm. Philippe, seeing an opportunity to annex the realms for himself later, accepted. For this, even Eudes could be grateful.

screensave31.png

This of course didn't mean that Eudes was now a loyal and loving vassal of his King, but that he at least would accept Philippe for the time being. It was a very trying time of course, and there was no guarantee that the King of France wouldn't forsake him, or that Robert Curthose wouldn't promptly annex his lands before wars end.

screensave32.png

The war continued to progress poorly. With Paris under siege, it was clear that the English were going to win this war. So much of Philippe's regiments were in Egypt, still fighting in the first crusade. Primarily, mercenaries and the regiments of Eudes were the only ones defending France.

screensave35.png

Eudes was lucky. The King of England only wanted Anjou, knowing the tide would turn with Philippe's regiments heading home.

screensave36.png

After a near fatal defeat, Eudes had no desire to try his luck. It was time to settle down and deal with his hand. He could only hope that King of France had no desire to exact revenge.

screensave37.png

screensave39.png

Despite these trying times, the economy was recovering, and Eudes position was stabilized.

screensave40.png

Eudes officially joined the crusade at last. Despite the economic improvements, Eudes still had no desire to venture into Egypt. The excuses made were for the most part justified. Eudes had very little men to send to Egypt and command.

screensave43.png

Without any warning, there was yet another war between France and England, this time over Bretagne. Unlike the previous war, this one was certain to be much longer..

screensave44.png

Eudes loyally raised what regiments he had left for his King. Eudes was as tired of this fat and ugly Robert Curthose as Philippe.

screensave45.png

Again, the armies of England press, and annex Rennes from both the Bretons and the French.

screensave47.png

Eudes discovers a claim on the title of Anjou, currently occupied by the King of England. Entirely where this claim comes from is uncertain, but possibly the titles claim was granted to Eudes by the King himself, in hopes of perhaps either patching up relations with Eudes, or merely keeping his loyalty.

screensave48.png

Eudes personally leads many sieges and battles in Normandy, hoping to strike the killing blow on Robert himself.

screensave50.png

Eudes' lover Mathilde no longer loved Eudes at some point during this time. While Eudes would not succumb to any sort of depression as a result of Mathilde's new found chastity, he would still lose an important emotional crutch.

screensave52.png

It is also during this war that the First Crusade was at an end and widely considered a success.

screensave56.png

Philippe Ier, whose reign was mediocre at best, dies in battle attempting to retake Paris. Although his regiment would, the loss of the King was a major blow seemingly. Philippe would be succeeded by his son Guillaume, who was of course Guillaume Ier.

screensave60.png

screensave61.png

Fortifications continue to spread across Eudes' lands. The war was primarily being fought in Normandy, and as this was too close to home for Eudes, the time for fortifying was never better.

screensave70.png

screensave67.png

With the death of the King of England in battle and now with a small child on the throne, it was clear that the nobility were on the verge of revolt. The Count of Hereford was possibly but a start from a large list of problems to come. It was from this knowledge that the Regent and his council made the decision to return all land to the King of France, and to deal with the brewing internal unrest from this devastating war.

screensave74.png

The peace was a good one for France. It was returned all the land that had been taken during the first and the beginning of the second, but it was at the same time a bitter one for England to swallow. What started off so successfully had quickly eliminated all the fortunes gained from the first.

To make matters worse, if the King had not betrayed Eudes, they'd at least would've still held onto his lands, which strategically indeed had proved useful.

screensave75.png

All was remaining well for Eudes on this same note. The prosperity of his lands continued to grow.

screensave76.png

France was not fully recovered however. The rather long and hard fought war had left a toll. Much of the lands bordering Normandy had been looted or were suffering plague. Taking advantage of the chaotic situation, Eudes would begin his plots and intrigues once again, this time against his only other true rival, the son of Philippe and current King, Guillaume.

screensave77.png

Eudes' relationship with his wife, Constance de Bourgogne, had always been rather bad. Eudes immediately found her highly unattractive due to certain physical defects, and was never one to treat her with kindness as a result. His open affair, even if it had ended, was enough to drive her mad. However; it is perhaps his new found success that had finally driven her over the edge, for she seems to have lost all sense of sanity not far after wars end.

screensave78.png

At long last, Eudes' master plan was coming to fruition. Guillaume's heir was but an infant as a result of his oldest child, also named Guillaume, perishing for unknown reasons. This meant that if Guillaume was to die, severe instability would be very likely to follow. Under no circumstances could Eudes pass this up. A plan was hatched and the dye was cast.

screensave79.png

Although Guillaume didn't die, he was severely wounded. With his life hanging in the balance, Guillaume knew it was planned. He however had no idea exactly who, as the assassins weren't arrested or even captured. He had enough enemies so that it could be any one of them. Eudes was perhaps safe from danger.

screensave80.png

Nearly a month later, Eudes learned that the King had died as a result of his wounds. Guillaume Ier was no more, and the Kingdoms only heir, but a babe, was unwittingly going to become the central device in a grand web of intrigue that all in France will be caught in.

screensave0h.png

With the King of France dead, the two year old son of Guillaume was now King, as Charles IV. Eudes hope was obviously to see civil war. There was no reason for this child to be King, and these heirs of Hugh Capet, according to Eudes, had mismanaged France long enough.

screensave1j.png

It wasn't long after that Eudes' had died. The cause of death is obscure, though it wasn't beyond Eudes to finally rid himself of his most hated wife now that she was insane. Eudes still chose not to remarry however.

screensave2.png
]

During this time his son, the steward Charles, had begun making demands for a title of his own. Feeling betrayed and angry at his sons foolishness, Eudes disinherits him.

screensave3.png

While disorganised, the Holy land was for the most part under righteous Christian rule. The King of Sicily and Governor of Pisa pulled most of the work after Philippe Ier and Guillaume Ier of France showed their cowardice.

screensave5.png

At last, there was a revolt. The Duke of Aquitaine was in armed revolt. However, only for one province. The war would end with the annexation of Poitiers by the King of France, in return that the Duke would submit once more to the King.

screensave6.png

Also of note during this period, Eudes is justly given a claim on the title Duke of Flanders after various insults, mostly over the supposed character of the Duke and the death of Guillaume Ier.

screensave7.png

Two more vassals declare independence from the child King, but again no where near the results that Eudes had desired.

screensave8.png

Eudes demands a large tax from all classes against better judgment, but he hoped this large sum of gold would prove useful for later schemes, intrigues and perhaps, war.

screensave10.png

More vassals call into question Eudes' character, and again Eudes demands compensation.

screensave11jv.png

Despite all this, the economy across the duchy continues to improve. Eudes' is coming to the realization that much of his reign will merely be remembered as a time of great wealth.

screensave12.png

As a result of these good times, the peasants were hoping for better conditions, namely the abolishment of their positions all together. Eudes instead gives the nobles of the land more power over the unruly mob.

screensave13m.png

This however doesn't prevent the peasants of Hainaut receiving more power.

screensave14.png

Eudes continues his plots against the King of France despite his friends protests. Eudes chooses to further isolate himself rather than ever be loyal to what he perceived as an illegitimate dynasty.

screensave16.png

Eudes grandson and hopefully a future Duke of Vermandois, Gaucher, comes of age. Although highly intelligent and brilliant on the battlefield, Gaucher is prone to pride, a selfish disposition, and great cruelty to his subjects and servants. His reign will surely be interesting.

Not long after Gauchers maturity is reached, Eudes de Vermandois dies peacefully. At 59 years of age, his rule was mixed. Although he saw no new lands come into his possession, his plots and intrigues against three Kings of France are infamous. His refusal to participate in Crusades tarnished his already rotten soul, and his attempts at civil war ultimately failed. Although he died unhappy with what he did (or didn't) achieve, his reign saw many economic improvements and technological advancements. Eudes' last wish is non-surprisingly therefore, that his son and heir use these to his best advantage, and may he be the one that takes the mayors back to where they belong.

Some notes:

(1st. I forgot to take a picture of his death, hence the abruptness.
(2nd. I was highly disappointed in what little damage was caused by the death of Guillaume. Needless to say, I clearly had no desire to crusade and his cowardly trait gave me every excuse I needed to avoid doing it.
(3rd and final. I was tempted to pledge to the King of Germany rather than remain with France once Guillaume died from his wounds. However; Germany is in elective law and I felt it'd have been gamey, so I didn't. If anyone wishes I did and therefore wants to, it may at some point lead to the title King of Germany.

You still did much better than i did with Draztikus's saved game. Shortly after starting with his save, I got that event where I could either declare Independence or Declare War on France (and hopefully, give him Realm Duress). Unfortunately, even with all of France's troops heading to Egypt, I was only able to siege the King's two provinces in France. By the time my troops were shipped to Spain, the King's armies were on the march back to France and no other Vassals had declared war.

And unlike normal behavior (where the AI randomly moves troops around, gathering them into large armies), he sent an army to relieve both of the sieges and another army to siege my provinces at the same time. All it would have taken was one more month to capture that 3rd province in Spain, but it wasn't to be. England at the time was an ally of France, and i quickly paid them off that first month, but even with spamming the King of France, he wouldn't accept peace and I ended up losing the game. Obviously, I'm not good enough for the finer points of the game. I too saw that Germany was Elective, but with the large Duke of Saxony being first in line, I didn't want to take the risk of being forced to switch to Elective if that event came up. Looking back, I guess i should have ask to become a vassal of England, after paying them off, but it never even occurred to me.

I sure hope I do a better job with your save, or this will be a short AAR. Wish me luck. (Any suggestions before I start the game, would be appreciated tho).

EDIT: LOL, you sure gave me a Role-Player's nightmare of a Duke to play,, talk about alot of traits! I've already got a couple of ideas on how to play him (tho, with him being stressed, he might not last long). Chaste, Honest, Just, Cruel, Modest, Sceptical, Temperate, Coward, Weak-Willed and Hostile. hehehe

Lookung forward to reading about this crazy king!

Note: Just a preview of how I did my first day. Haven't even unpaused the game yet, but this is the route I'm heading.

March 13, 1109

"I'm in hiding."

See, I'm not ashamed to admit it to myself. Tho, if anyone else asks, I just tell them I'm spending more time with my best friend in all the world, my lovely wife, Cecile, and our two precious sons we still have. "Why am I in hiding, you ask?" It might be better to ask "Who am I hiding from". It's that son of mine, my oldest and my now appointed Heir, Gaucher. No sooner had I assumed the Throne of this Honorable Duchy at the death of my dear Father, when he came barging in (Yes, you heard me, he actually BARGED into MY private room), got up in my face and demanded to be named his one and true Heir. He kept talking and talking, giving me no time to collect my thoughts, and before I knew it, I was signing the Official Documents, changing the Inheritance Laws of the Land to Salic Primogeniture. He's always been stubborn, always wanting HIS way. In the back of my mind I knew it would come to this, but still....
csalicprimo.jpg

Don't get me wrong, it is a good Law to enact, as it frees me to marry off his older sisters to benefit the Realm without worrying about some foreign usurper claiming our birthright, but still, he didn't have to badger me. I thought that would make him happy, but it was not to be. I had no sooner affixed the Seal of de Vermandois to the documents, when he started in on the next thing. "Make me the Marshall of the glorious forces of Valois" he pressed. And next up was "I've got this girl in mind to marry", "The oldest child of the Count of Charolais, the Heir to the Duke of Burgundy", he exclaimed. At this point he was rambling on about "My SON will be Heir to TWO Duke titles". I finally just caved in and gave him what he wanted and sent off the emissary to have it arranged. God help me if the Count refuses my request. At this point he abruptly left and I scurried (yes dammit, I scurried, now 'that' I'm feeling some shame for and looking back on it, it rankles) off to the rooms of my 2nd wife. Maybe he won't follow me here, he refuses to have anything to do with her or his two half-brothers. I just know after the marriage, he'll want to be made Count of one of my provinces, hopefully he'll settle for Vixen. I already know how to do it, just after my brother, the Diocese Bishop marries them, I'll make the announcement, he couldn't make a fuss then. Not in front of the whole Court and the extended family.

Could he?

Edit: Are these pictures too small for everyone? First time for me on posting pictures here and I'm following the guidelines of making them 600 X 480.

Hahah, best of luck to you, surely. I left you alot of gold and some good claims, so watch for the Duke of Flanders and the other claims I have in France. Furthermore, I regret not pledging to the King of Germany. If things get too bad, consider your last ditch effort to pledge to Germany and have them fight the House of Capet for you. Maybe they will put you and this family on the French throne! :D.

BTW, nice first post. I can tell I'm going to enjoy "my sons" story :D.

Germany got into Realm Duress shortly after I started. 2 years in and he's still fighting. So far, he's winning hands down, but every time he defeats one, another DOW's him. Shouldn't be long until he starts making White Peace with everyone and it all falls apart.

JUST BECAUSE I'M HIDING, DOESN'T MEAN I CAN'T SCHEME!!! Part 1.

avexine.jpg

I went through with it, yes I did. I grabbed ahold of that anger, stood up to my son and gave him the County of Vexin. Just as I planned. He looked so smug standing there in the church with his new wife, in front of everyone. So I made the announcement. After-all, what could he do?

Well, he called me a weak coward in front of everyone, announced we are now rivals and stormed off. That's what he did. You could have heard a pin drop. And there's his young wife, all bewildered and at a loss. But who cares about her, that's her job, to get married off according to the whims of her Father to whomever he wants. And what did I do? Yep, you guessed it, I hightailed it back to my wife's chambers. Yessireebob.

bcordoba.jpg

In Aug of 1110, the Pope, in all His Wisdom, Called a Crusade to liberate Burgos. Good for him and anyone who wants to follow him, I'll just stay safe and sound here. That stupid child we call our King goes and shows how grand he is, by declaring war on the lone Sheikdom of Cordoba, which happens to be sitting right next to his one Demesne province in Spain. The King mobilizes most of the country (including me, but I wasn't feeling well that day, so we stayed home), marches in, almost has Cordoba's Castle captured, and,,, yeah, go ahead, you know the answer. He accepts peace for a whopping 1 Gold. All done here, move along folks, nothing to see here.

creims.jpg

While I was sitting that little skirmish out, I looked next door to my south, and saw the Bishop of Reims was sitting there, all by lonesome. So I thought, maybe I can use that fiasco is Spain to my advantage, and sent the Bishop a basket of fruit and an offer to be my vassal. He said no. But I know we're just horse trading so i sent him TWO baskets of fruit with the next envoy and this time he said yes. GO ME!!!! HA!!!!!!! (Don't let this get out, but it was old fruit that I found in the corner of my wife's bedroom chamber, why it was there I'll never know - and don't want to know).

dengland.jpg

In Apr of 1112, for the 3rd time in my lifetime, England goes and declares war on my Liege again. What is it with these two kids. Don't they have any rocks to throw at windows, they have to start wars? I finally decided that the time was now or never, and vowed to make good on my claims in the Duchy of Burgundy. I even surprised myself, called up all of my (and my vassals's) troops, and marched south, to get ready to attack.
emarch.jpg

(Okay, you got me, I was actually hoping those troops from Burgundy that the King had called up, would march north to help defend the Heartland of France.) We sat there,, and sat there,, and sat there, while England Sieged Anjou and Pontiers. But the King of France must have been taking his nap, cause he didn't do a thing. 3 months of war, and he gives away those two provinces to England. For some reason, this sounds so familiar. So I turned around and went home. All done here, move along folks, nothing to see here, Part Deux.

I guess our Illustrious King finally woke up from his little nappie-time, for in 1113 he decides once again to pick up the Call of the Crusade to liberate Burgos and goes and declares war on,,, nope, all those Infidels in Spain are safe. Don't worry Africa, no-one is heading your way. We're going to war with Egypt. Who just so happened to currently be at war with half of the know world (most of whom are fellow Infidels). And since i got out of the castle once before, i decide to do it again and gather everyone for a little trip south. All the way to Burgundy again.
fcapture.jpg

A swift victory and the Duke title of Burgundy is now mine, along with a new vassal in Chalons. As for that REAL coward in Macon, he begged for peace without me having to set foot in his province and GAVE me the province of Macon. Yeah, you heard me. I'M THE MAN !!

<To Be Continued>

Oh, and for those who are wondering how Germany is doing. It's July of 1113 and the King of Germany is now at war with 33 former Vassals.

Very nice! It's funny to see the two children go to war with one another, however. Oh, when will they learn? Where there's a Duke of Valois, there's a dead King waiting.

OLD AGE ISN'T AS MUCH FUN AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. Part 2.

agentl.jpg

By the year of our Lord, 1114, another of my Family's long desired plans came one step closer to fulfillment. I finally amassed enough Prestige to Claim the title of my most hated enemy, the Count of Gent - Heir to Duke of Flanders. With our previous claim on the Duke title, we were closer to annexing 4 new (and rich) vassals into our Realm. All it would take now, is for the eyes of the King of France to go elsewhere.

Surprisingly, it only took a few months before our 'Beloved' <laughs at his own joke> King to once again go to war with some no-name Infidel far, far from the Crusade target. Whilst sitting all safe in my Castle, i ordered up all of my Vassals and Armies to head to The Duke of Flanders province, for an attack on his vassal.

And before anyone even THINKS of muttering how unfair that was, I did the HONORABLE thing, by giving notice and DOW'ing his Vassal. Can I be blamed my troops were on manuevers in the Duke's Province when HE declared war on me? By the end of the year, another Duke Title (and 3 new vassals) were in my possesion. All that needs done now is a minor clean up operation to show the Count of Gent who's the new boss in town. Just after the new year, I sent my son and Heir, Count Gaucher (hey, I'll do anything to keep him even one province further away from me) into Gent to do the mopping up. Unfortunately, for him,,,,

My Heir forgot to wear his helmet and tried to knock down an arrow with his head.
hehehehe
By this time, he had managed to sire 3 sons (Edit - he actually had 4 sons - dang notes) and a daughter, so his 4 year old son now became my Heir. I've always been good with children so we should get along just fine.

Just to show how wonderful of a feeling it was to be rid of Gaucher, my Stress just melted away the following year. The next 5 years were fairly uneventful and ho-hum in the da Vermandois Realm. The King finally grew up and immediately went Schizo on us (yeah, like we didn't see that coming a mile away), picked up a couple more Counts who dared to cross the path of my Armies (not my path you understand, kinda hard to do that when I rarely leave my wife's rooms) and England and France went to war again. Once more trading who's turn it was to own Anjou and Pottiers.

One day tho, all my hiding came to naught, as the Pope sent a very important (and very unwilling to take no for an answer)Papal Bishop to see me. Something about my Scepticism? I'm not really sure what he was talking about, for he reminded me of my belated son in that he kept talking and talking. So I finally just nodded and signed whatever he wanted me to sign.

Then I hid in my wife's closet for a while.

Okay, a long while....

Okay Okay !! For 4 years, now leave me alone!

May of 1125 - The Castle is abuzz. People are rushing about. Cheers are echoing up and down the halls.

What is it I'm hearing? Could it be True! Could the day that my Grandfather and my Father worked so hard to achieve, finally arrive?

CIVIL WAR !!!!!!

Oh yes! Oh my!! My ancestors are smiling on me, showing me the path is clear!

I can do it!

I can muster my inner strength, draw on all of the anger and resentment that I've been building up for 55 years! I quickly order an army to immediately set sail for Spain, so as to capture the Kings only province there.

At last, after 16 years of sitting here, of being only a Duke,

"I"

"CAN"

"DO"

"Itttt,,,, ow

My arm hurts. I'm not feeling too we................

Oh no! It was a fun read. I can only hope that this child of Charlemagne has the traits necessary to be as ruthless as the situation requires :(. Good luck, deadmeat. :p

This has been a fun read so far. Not enough of these succession games around, in my opinion, especially on CK! Too bad for Henri he never got his chance to become king.
I wonder if the new kid will be too busy learning to read... what's his name, by the way?

Still, good going thus far. And a shed load of gold!
