Ive noticed the issue of judging victory has come up on the forum again. There was a time when I thought designing an official victory system was a good idea. Now I favour the ‘play for fun’ mentality. I just thought id write about the personal goals people set for themselves and how this affects their playing style. Weve had posts like this before of course. That is posts referring to different categories of players, and posts referring to the different measurements of success. Ive made this one to tie the two together. That is, how different types of player, judge success.
The war Mongerer – This type plays for the thrill of war. He is likely to DOW for little, or no reason, and judges success on his performance of his fighting. Although many players of this type do not ‘like to loose’, they will usually enjoy a fight regardless. They have a particular hate of gangbangers and the ‘UN’ mentality of some gamers. A war mongerer is often an experienced gamer and they favour nations with good leaders and manpower.
The expansionist – Plays with a fairly balanced style. He likes nothing more than to expand his borders as much as he can. Often regardless of whether these provinces are actually good for his economy. He plays with a traditional style of wargaming and favours colonial or large land nations. He measures success mainly in terms of size and will DOW only to further these aims. He may also tend to loose his temper when having to give up lots of territory in a war. This type of gamer is partial to a gang bang but will often be on the receiving end also as he is perceived as a threat to other gamers. Many noob players start out as an expansionist.
The perfectionist – This type of player loves to push his nation to the limit. He often has an excellent understanding of the rules and plays with the aim of improving on his previous achievements. He is perhaps slightly less competitive than other player types as he judges success from inner perfection rather than on other nations. Having said this if he will likely feel threatened from other perfectionist players who are doing better. Economy, bit most of all tech, are his measures of success.
The role player – This type of player is rare by itself. It tends to be a secondary trait along with one of the other mentioned above. They tend to have no victory conditions as such but instead judge a games success on its theme, story and player interaction. They tend to loose their temper when other players don’t get into the spirit of role playing as they see it.
The diplomat – Again this type of player is rare by itself. It tends to be a secondary trait also. The diplomat spends a lot of time using the chat function to further his aims. He will often also use the forum but in a different way. That is to use propaganda and to put across his ‘side of the story’. The diplomat often takes great pleasure in manipulating the game to suite his goals and can loose his temper where players react in what he sees as an illogical manner. The diplomat can be known to be rather sneaky with the chat log
