I'm playing v2.5.1 [1df6] on Steam OS (linux).

Issue:

Since December 14th, I've got the Paradox Launcher crash every time I hit the "Play" button.

  • A new folder was created on 12/14 in my Steam workshop content folder: 257510 (Stellaris is 281990). This folder contains *legacy.bin files, each one in its subfolder. I don't know if this is related to Stellaris, to be honest.
  • Paradox Launcher presents 0/58 mods (I disabled all of them to settle the issue).
  • I have one local mod.
  • The mod directory in Paradox Interactive contains 40 ugc_xxx.mod files.
  • The error.log files contains 17 similar lines:
[dlc.cpp.1599]: Could not find files for mod: ~/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/281990/yyy
where 'yyy' is an ID not corresponding any of the ugc_xxx.mod files.
Thanksfully at least, 58 = 40 + 1 + 17

  • I did the trick of deleting the json file (that lists both xxx and yyy mods), and all ugc*xxx.mod files.
  • On top of this, I unsubscribed/resubscribed one yyy mod, only to see its subfolder reappearing without any zip archive, same as before.
  • I haven't deinstalled/reinstalled the game.

So, I have 17 subscribed mods on Steam which .mod files aren't downloaded for a reason when I hit the "Play" button in the Paradox Launcher. Is suspect this to be the cause why the game crashes, even if all mods are disabled, but I'm not sure.

Comparing yyy "faulty" mods with xxx "good" mods:

  • yyy mods are stored already unpacked in their ~/content/281990/yyy subfolder;
  • xxx mods are stored as a zip archive in their ~/content/281990/xxx subfolder;
  • yyy mods' descriptor.mod files have a line: 'path="pathOnModdersPC/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/mod/modName"', or not any path nor achive line.
  • xxx mods' descriptor.mod files have a line: 'archive="modName.zip"'
Those yyy mods are not "niche" or very complex mods, and some have even been updated by their author to 2.5:
The Planetary Diversity suite (base, unique, exotic, new worlds)
Better Galaxy Icon Overview
Reduce Aura Graphics
Planet and Starbase Icon Background
Katyo's Slow Speed Battles
Mizzli's Battle Debris
Expanded Events
Cultural Overhaul [e-c-t] 2.5
No Clustered Starts
UI Overhaul 1080 Plus
48 Empire Colors Revival
Human Alliance
Remastered Human Portraits
Beautiful Universe 2.0

Is there anything I can do on my end?
Is there a new compatibility issue between the Paradox Launcher on Steam Os and some obsolete mod packaging?

The legacy stuff was from when the launcher was first released for old mods and yes these legacy ones can get stuck. Normally deleting the mods_registry.json file and all the ugc numbered.mod files fixes things on windows.

The mods being zipped or non zipped is not a issue. Many more mods are being non zipped when downloaded from steam recently.

I am not sure if there are issues with the launcher and linux. I think there is a known issue that mac is not working???? I think you should post in the tech support forum asking for help and also look in tech support for known issues with linux if any.

Thank you, I will follow your advice. I'm sure there's an exact correspondance between mods listed as errors and mods being downloaded already unpacked, and without ugc*.mod file.

[EDIT] I could play again without any mod after verifying file integrity [/EDIT]
