What mechanic determines when a sub fleet returns to port? I am having trouble with fleets running out of oil a couple of sea zones away from port.

Sent a message to a moderator to move it. I'm a bit skeptical about that value in misc.txt, as the description suggests it is only used for combat. I have had naval units that have never seen combat and still run out of oil.

I will try letting all my fleets run till end of their missions to see what happens. Usually I interfere by sending units home early because I don't like the convoy strain of fleets replenishing when nearly empty.

Hè. Turns out the issue is much simpler. At 20% oil the unit will return. If 20% is not enough to last until port (due to too high range -> too high distance to port -> too long travel time), the unit will run dry before arriving.

I am almost disappointed.

Hardcoded in the mission logic: both ships and airplanes will abort their mission and return to base if either oil or supplies are below 20%.
The exact formula is:

sum(division.[oil|supplies]) / sum(division.max[oil|supplies]) < 0.2
Sadly while very simple in appearance, this issue is hard to fix from this side. If I raised the value - even just slightly - it would very likely break the low models of CORE transports.

For now at least, I think it would be best if CORE worked around the issue by either decreasing range or increasing fuel of the affected models. I'll push @dec152000 a note about it.
