Hi.

Haven´t had the time to explore the wonders of 1.2 yet... Have anyone here experienced if the subs in 1.2 are more effecient (or in other words: can they actually sink anything in 1.2 as they didn´t in 1.1)

So I guess my question is if there´s any reason to build subs in 1.2 ?!

Havnt really tested them but in 1.1 they where very usefull at attacking convoys... It was only when the enemy accidently happend to run over them with a carrier group that they got beaten... but other than that they are very usefull...

Nothing has changed from 1.1 and that's good because in DD subs are used in the historical way: conwoy hunters who can occasionaly sink a big ship. To avoid being stuk in never ending naval battles or lose all your subs, wait the minumum required hours of combat and retreat.

Good advise. Also use small sub groups and not those big 30 sub groups you might be used to. Avoid coast lines where naval bombers might catch your subs.

in 1.1 they already sank naval surface ships - I sank one CV and one CA during one naval battle. In another one I sank 2 CV's and during a third example I sank a few old battleships with my sub stack.

in 1.1 they already sank a lot of convoys, if properly managed. I did sank the bulk of US convoys when his army was in Africa.

Either you are an awfull player - or you just love HOI2 vanilla with the ueber killer sub stacks ... let's call a cat a cat.

:D

Yes its far better now, since subs aren´t the magic weapon´s .....

But on the contrary......why are Battles between subs and enemy naval stacks so looooong. I never loose an Sub....because its easy to flee, after the first Hours.

In 1.3 the subs should die faster. But on the other side....much more difficult to find. Especially if they do night attacks.

If i see it right....Doomsday lacks a feature, where you loose Subs automaticly, when you attack an Convoy with escorts.

I use stacks of 6 and retreat from the long battles... But sofar I can only remember getting a dutch destroyer from 4 or 5 games (with all doctrines researched).

Fair enough that Sub´s doesn´t clean the oceans for enemys, but IMHO they were more balanced in HOI2

Balanced? They were completely overpowered. You could easily destroy the whole Royal navy with subs. They were far superior to any surface fleet in terms of expensiveness versuspower.

let me give you some advice for doomsday :) for surface fleet engagments with subs.

Like you said - research all doctrines. Use stacks of 8 to 12 subs ... Try to battle outside UK coastal waters cause you'll prolly avoid his naval bombers.

Set your missions on night. Use your best wolfpack leaders.

Use naval bombers to soften up the enemy.

Build up some surface ships to soften up the enemy before you move in with subs.

Use subs to finish of the enemy - in that way you have the best chances. If you are lucky you can get a shot at close distance and the enemy will lack many ships to fire back...

subs in doomsday are more supportive units for grand naval operations. So it's cool to have some stacks you can use during combat.

Basicly subs can sink some ships - but they are not that effective. The better judgement will be to build a combined fleet with surface ships and subs.

Subs are also good interceptors for invasion fleets. Especially if you play Germany. It will help your NAV's to secure the seas around France, Ireland and England.

And always remember - if your enemy has his big ships waiting in harbour - low on screens - you should put your subs to guard that harbour cause when they flee - you'll be killing his ships - I once sank 2 US Carriers by doing this ;) .

ps = something I still have to try - attach CVL's to subs ... perhaps your positioning is enhanced so the subs can start the battle at close distance.

Submarines should be realistic as possible.
Here are my 3 points on sub realism in DD:

1. Subs vs. escorted convoys - they sink but NEVER get damaged?
2. Subs vs. Balanced Fleets - They take damage & sometimes sink or damage
a ship or 2 or 3 (OK)
3. Subs vs. Aircraft - TOTALLY UNREALISTIC !! Hours and hours of battle
because subs never dive & aircraft can stay aloft for days ?????????

Something interesting I learned I made sub fleets of 9 each, and they did alright but were quickly decimated. I changed it to few fleets, 12 sub fleets, sank more transports, sank more allied ships in battles, before slowly being decimated by giant fleets.

Side not 6 carrier fleets kill all.
