I got bladly suprised to see that 2 of my submarines (str 100 org 50) which started at ouessant, arrived at St Georges Channel with a fraction of their value (43 str, 13 org). They were not intercepted and the trip lasted perhaps 2 hours.

Ok, second thought. Can it be the escorts of the convoy lane? I got a report that I had sunk some convoys and escorts. The losses seems impressives, but it can explains?

It's the escort ships of the convoys that rip through your poor ships. This escorts can even severely damage groups of capital ships in short time.

I don't think it's a bug, rather something that needs tweaking. Convoy defence efficiency. ;)

There is a long thread from MathGuy about this....
(The "killer convoys")
He concluded that it most often happened in the 41' scenario as the AI doesn't have escorts in the earlier scenarios.
It appears that the escorts are overpowered and need fixing.
(as of now a whole battlefleet can be seriously damaged by a few convoys)

Yeah, its pretty poor when you find out, the navy blockading the emeny in port is made up of near dead capital ships n subs.

Id ideally like a popup to give me the option to engage!
Fleet A
2 SS
1 CA etc
encounters enemy convoy
28 escorts
40 transports

Do you wish to attack Y/N

Or a switch On/OFF in the CCB. Engage convoys where possible!

Clarification about convoy_def_eff

In my limited tests of convoy battles with different values of convoy_def_eff, I never saw the amount of damage change. If you have 5 escorts fighting 1 sub flotilla and convoy_def_eff = 0, you get the same damage as if convoy_def_eff = 100.

The thing that convoy_def_eff appears to change is the probability that the sub will detect the convoy (and therefore attack it). With convoy_def_eff = 0 one sub flotilla seemed to have about an 80 % chance of getting in a convoy battle each day. With convoy_def_eff = 100, that chance seems to fall to 40 %.

My tests were not complete enough to prove the exact formula, but I am sure that this variable affects detection not combat.

More later if I get time to run additional tests.

I wish you could assign U-boats to patrol for either A) Warships (primary search target), B) Convoys (primary search target), or C) Either....sort of just like you can assign DDs and TPs to convoy duty. Assign SS to raid shipping lanes.

I don't see any change in damage unless you increase the defense of naval units. And you need to increase it a lot.

Graf Spee with defense of 7 suffered damage about 1 combat in 3.

Increasing defense to 70 reduced damage to 1 combat in 6.
