Hey all.

I hope the questions I am going to ask, haven't already been asked and/or answered in another threat.

But my questions are as follows:
-How will submarine warfare, either Sub VS surface, or Sub VS Sub work.

-How will sonar work. Will sonar be affected by speed of the vesel which has it activated, and possibly, a partial circle around it. For example. submarines can't look directly behind them, due to their own propulsion noises (I hope this is implemented).

-How directly can you control your sub? Only as in ''Deep dive'' ''periscope depth'' and ''surface'' or is it really allowed to chose a specific depth for your boat.

I am very interested into submarine warfare, and the last 10 books I read were all about it. So, I am very interested how detailed submarine warfare will be in this game, which I am very excited about.

Thank you in advance.

Much like you'd expect, I think. If you are a sub, you lay pretty still and hope some target gets into range. If you are defending, you litter the area with sonobuoys and hope for the best. :)

-How will sonar work. Will sonar be affected by speed of the vesel which has it activated, and possibly, a partial circle around it. For example. submarines can't look directly behind them, due to their own propulsion noises (I hope this is implemented).
Sonar is affected by the speed and noise of its own vessel, yes, in addition to target vessels and everything in the immediate vicinity of either. If either unit is on the surface, sea state is also an important factor.

Baffle arcs ie blind zones are fully implemented for bow, keel, flank mounted and towed sonar arrays.

We also take sonar frequency bands into account; this mostly affects shallow water detection and convergence zones.

-How directly can you control your sub? Only as in ''Deep dive'' ''periscope depth'' and ''surface'' or is it really allowed to chose a specific depth for your boat.
We have seven depth marks for subs (obviously not all subs can go very deep). The simulator supports any arbitrary depth, say "go to 332.4 ft", but we don't expose that in the user interface as it is cumbersome and really unnecessary, but you can do it when you build scenarios.

I am very interested into submarine warfare, and the last 10 books I read were all about it. So, I am very interested how detailed submarine warfare will be in this game, which I am very excited about.
I am sure you'll find sub simulation pretty advanced and satisfactory. There is, obviously, some level of complexity we can't satisfy, as we don't do fluid dynamics simulation of the entire ocean, and neither do you have a detailed simulation of the sonar controls (this is not a specialized sub sim), but we really hope you like it.

Quoting JanH, the dev team plans to include:Ula, Virginia, Akula, Lada, Astute, type 212, Yasen, Gotland and the SSGN Ohio conversion submarines.

The Ula, Lada, Type 212 and Gotland are diesel-submarines so the answer to your question would be
yes:).

As far as spamming goes that is extremely relevant to what I'm doing right now, planning a trip to Israel with the other half.

I have always wondered how nuclear subs will do against diesel subs. I know very little about sub-warfare, but my impression is that diesel subs are more stealthy because they dont have that constant humming sound of a nuclear reactor.
At least thats why I have read on random youtube comments on videos featuring subs :D

This is what I've heard, too, hitchens. You probably need some pretty high security clearances to really know, though :)

True. But there have been some incidents displaying just how stealthy these disel subs can be.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2006/nov/13/20061113-121539-3317r/
Chinese submarine surface within firing range of US carrier.

The Swedish Gotland disel sub "

"In early November the same year, she participated in a NATO "blue-water" exercise in the Atlantic. There she reportedly won a victory in a mock "duel" with Spanish naval units, and then the same in similar duel against a French SSN, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. She also "defeated" an American SSN, the USS Houston"

My impression is that diesel subs are in many ways superior, but obviously lack the range and arsenal of the larger nuceal powered submarines.

Hmmm, it makes me wonder if they were stalking eachother, Fooling around. Maybe playing a little cat and mouse? Doesnt NATO have a command central that keep track of all its ships/planes at all times?

I assume that nobody, absolutely nobody, outside the subs know precisely where they are at any given time. There is little benefit to anyone in the military knowing their positions, and an enormous downside if that information should fall into enemy hands.

My theory, totally unsubstantiated, is that the British and French navies used the same advanced software for finding the optimal route to minimize detection and all that, and it came up with the same result :) At any rate, it is absolutely mind-boggling that these subs hit head on in these waters.

Yep... statistically speaking that's "impossible". Great laugh at other people's expense when it happened, though. :)

This is completely off topic but who said that quote in your signature Imperialman?

Another question.
Will submarines be able carry mines (at the expense of other weapons) in the game?
