how am i supposed to effectively "starve" britain as germany or at least severely disrupt its convoys? i know i use the "convoy raiding" mission, but after sinking a couple of convoys, a strong surface fleet invariably approaces and annihilates my sub group! any tips, am i doing anything wrong? right now i hold benelux, france + norway (and poland et al)

excellent thread! :D

but my question really is can you deliberately let your wolfpacks hunt solely for convoys, while avoiding naval battles? i understand that of course that occasionally one could get caught, but is there a way to minimize losses? or do i have to manually micro my wolfpacks to flee everytime a naval engagement occurs?

cause everytime i set my subs to "convoy raiding", i leave them and after a few days i get a popup saying they've been annihilated with only a sub or two making it back:(

Try to keep up the Doctrines and keep up the Sub models to as modern as possible I believe. Setting Convoy hunting around Spain I find eliminates a lot of the convoys due to their Southern Hemisphere provinces.

Not only that, slow down their trade effectiveness with the world! Kill the economy 'transports' by blockading the area around the UK.

I usually organise my subs in a way that one fleet is responsible for two regions. When they are succesfull I sent them to the other region for convoy hunting.

For the regions around the spanish or portugese coast I use a strong surface fleet with a superior tactician with high skill (Raeder or as far as I remember: Saalwächter, Marschall or Böhme) and change their operation zone after a successfull raid, too. You can also sent some Naval Bombers (without escort fighters) based in Bordeaux on patrol there. So you can move your raiding group out of these zones when a big stack arrives which are more likely to operate there than in the middle of the ocean or at the african coast.

A close blockade of the British island is of cause more lethal for your subs than a high sea blockade.

A good tip is also not to hunt too close to GB - hit the convoys about 2-3 provinces out into the Atlantic - less change of a fleet being encountered out there as most seem to stay in the waters near GB and the Med.

but after sinking a couple of convoys, a strong surface fleet invariably approaces and annihilates my sub group!
I use 36 subs in each "zone", 2 under vice admirals; 1 with either seawolf or superior tactician traits, the other with spotter. 1 admiral or grand admiral with seawolf or superior tactician gets the third group of 12 subs. Yes I get OCL penalties. However they beat the living crap out of the RN. DISCLAIMER: 1.3b2 SLI with only the original starting doctrines until after Barbarosa. After Barbarosa I switch to base strike and start building my carriers. By this time Saalwatcher, and Bohm are sk lvl 6 or better admirals or grand admirals. Grand admiral Donitz usually is sk lvl 7 or better by then, and he commands most of the remaining subs. Trust me, until the USA gets "massive strike" the wolf packs rule the waves. I rarely if ever do convoy raiding, Rader and company prefer hunting capital ships. :D

EDIT: What am I calling a zone? In my parlance, a zone is a significant part of a theater of operations. For example, the Atlantic Ocean theater contains 3 active zones. Zone 1: British/Irish island areas; Zone 2: Gibraltar and surrounding areas; and later Zone 3: East coast of the USA. I run 6x99 subsas soon as lvl 4 subs are researched, which I start right after dd3.

That thread is very old.
Depending on the version you're playing, results may be a little different... ;)
IIRC, Blue Emu did his test with arm 1.2. You can still achieve his results in 1.3b2. However in 1.3b2(and most other mods) why bother? You can do more damage with a successful sealion.
