So I am playing Venice at a 769 game start and the other two republics Amalfi and Genoa are subjects of the Byzantine Empire and Lombardy respectively. It is the year 990 now and almost the entire mediterranean is covered in trade posts by now, most of them belonging to Venice.

I find it extremely annoying that there is absolutely nothing I can do about my competitors. If they were independent I could attack them for their trade posts, etc. but that isn't going to happen in a million years. Is there anything I can do about it (in Ironman)? I have fabricated a claim on the county of Amalfi now, that I could use, but what would happen if I did take that county?

Any suggestions?

Conquer genoa directly from Lombardy to kill the republic, spam trade posts in now-open places, swear to the empire, take out amalfi and then usurp the empire to restore the roman republic?

I went ahead and attacked the Bzyantine Empire for the county of Amalfi. I took it, created the duchy of Amalfi and then gave the county and the duchy (republic) to the mayor of another town in Amalfi. Now that screwed up my whole game, as I now have 6 dynasties in my Republic and cannot grant Amalfi independence. Don't believe it? See for yourself:

Sounds like a bug to me incog - any duchy republic you create as a republic should become a non-patrician republic(same as a non-coastal capital one).

Sounds like a bug to me incog - any duchy republic you create as a republic should become a non-patrician republic(same as a non-coastal capital one).
I think what happened was that the guy in question was a patrician of Amalfi, but also a mayor/patrician of one of the cities in c_amalfi. So when the republic was dismantled, he remained a patrician - now in my republic.

How quickly did you hand out the title? Taking the last lands of a republic does not instantly destroy the patrician titles. Wait a few days until they are gone, hand out the republic title.

I do not know what causes this bug. My hypothesis is: when republic attacks a republic with claim on its only county (the capital itself) and conquers that, all mayors and barons will become attacker's vassals. BUT if any of them is patrician of the defeated republic, he will become vassal without losing status of patrician. Which in turn brings to 6 family situations. Maybe there can be more - 7 families, 8...

I do not think one merchant republic can be vassal of another republic...

I do not think one merchant republic can be vassal of another republic...
That is my theory as well. I had to murder the entire dynasty (I guess about 15 characters) to make it go away again... since there were already five families, the death of the last member of the 6th didn't cause a new family to be created.

I did give them the title very soon after the war was over, but I don't think that mattered - they were a Patrician in my republic immediately after the peace deal.

No, they are actually quite active building trade posts - I just keep stealing all of them.
