I'm currently in the midst of a campaign as Japan where I elected to pursue the "Northern Strategy (SU invasion by Japan)" (DH 1.04, Vanilla, '33 scenario).
I was given the option to open hostilities in January of '36 but figured I would be at too much of an advantage, so delayed my invasion until April of '37 (coinciding roughly with the 'historical' Marco Polo timeline). Been a really fun campaign so far (lotsa nail-biting infantry encirclements) and, as of January '39, Imperial Japan has spanked the reds to the central Asian plains (i.e. east of the Urals). They are down to roughly 80-ish (if intel is correct) divisions with no substantial air force, navy, or merchant marine assets.
Europe is still at peace with Germany pursuing it's historical run-up to war.
Right around the middle of January, I received the "Stalin Sues for Peace" event. Since I didn't expect this event so soon (I'm still three territories away from Sverdlovsk) and figuring it would be similar to HOI2, I selected the "Free Hand in Mongolia and Sakhalin" option. Lo and behold... the SU regained ALL of her territories (apart from the northern half of Sakhalin Island) with Mongolia/Tannu Tuva merging to become a Japanese puppet. Only other valid option available was communist eradication.
I was absolutely dumbfounded!
After all those events where the (White) Russian Rebels supplied money for an insurrection, I figured I'd at least gain a Siberian puppet with territory gains along the Sea of Okhotsk!
Greater Siberian Co-Prosperity Sphere? Nope, nada, all land gains reversed!
Does anyone else have any experience pursuing a Soviet-focused strategy as Japan where they were able to realize territorial gains (without total annexation)? Perhaps I need to go back, slow my roll, and wait for Germany to pounce? Maybe I need to join the Axis?
Not sure I have the momentum to complete annexation of the SU prior to Barbarossa (not a lot of infrastructure east of the Urals), although I'm willing to give it a try. Just crappy that you can spank the crap out of the SU independently with Japan and come away with nothing when they sue for peace.
Thoughts?
