Hey, I've got a problem here; I'm playing the United States in the Grand Scenerio. Unfortunatly my United States keeps turning into an economic backwater due to two things 1) constant wars with Britain and 2)a complete lack of Machine parts. The first problem can be dealt with, of course, the second....I'm not so sure. None of my factories can produce Machine Parts and the World Market is completely dry of the damn things; this leaves me in a predicament as I can't actually built any more factories without them which makes it hard for me to get a good economy which, likewise, makes it impossible to shoot every damn Britain that has it coming :) Can someone help?

Also push your industry technologies - some of them come with machine parts free. Including the one which enables construction of MP factories (after which point you should be okay).

I am always friendly to the British, trade tech to Texas for Beaver (allows me to claim Oklahoma, which gives prestige), then I trade my two Canadian claims to Britain (when I can do it on a 1 for 1 basis) for the claims in Montana and Idaho. Claim those, and get more prestige. Then I usually, after inheriting Texas, have enough prestige to get first dibs on anything on the market.

The Brits are the only ones making machine parts when the game starts, quit shooting them!

I agree with Lord Palle. Which techs come with machine parts for free and which enable you to build those factories? By the way, if you are sooo gentle, which are the prerequisites to build the Machine Part factory? Cement? Iron? Coal? Money?

Thanks

There are several industry techs what give you machine parts although I can't remember there names. You have to research Interchangable parts (which gives you 10 machine parts) and wait for the precision works invention to fire to build machine parts factories. IIRC the start date for that invention is 1950 so don't rush for that invention too fast :)

For an MP factory you need:
10 iron
10 cement
5 machine parts
£20,000

It converts coal and iron into machine parts.

I have also noticed something, on regular occasions now.

in my last game, Britain got Hong Kong, yes, thats right, it worked, the treaty of chuan pi or whatever its called worked.

now, Britain and China were in a colonial war for years, Britain eventually won! again, the first time i have seen this. Prussia was crushed by Russia again though, lol.

anyway, to the point, whenever Britain gets into a lengthy war with someone, they don't seem to sell machine parts, or at least don't sell very many, during a war, i have noticed this in both 1.01 and 1.02.

Maybe they moblize, taking pops from the factory?

My Techtionary and Industrial overview (links in my sig) answer what you need to build a factory and which path(s) lead to the techs/inventions.

Shameless self-promotion, I know, but the overviews can be quite handy ;)

Yes, isn't it a rather idiotic design decision to only make one nation able to produce machine parts at the start of the game, and then make it the most important resource when industrializing.

Not really. Britain was the first nation to industrialize and the other countries were more or less dependant on the UK for finished goods untill they could begin to catch up. That's what the UK's MP monopoly when the game starts represents.

Precisely correct. Thus Victoria teaches us a lesson in the fact that history is not usually like a game of Risk, where all sides start with equal possibilities.

If you're playing a medium-prestige nation like Spain or Sardinia or whatever, you just have to wait for a big war. During peace, high prestige AI nations are buying all the parts that show up on the WM. They use them to build a zillion explosives factories that never produce anything.

But when one of those huge wars happen, where Austria and Russia and Turkey plus various supporting characters are all going at it hammer and tongs, they stop the importing and you should be able to get your hands on some.

I've even been able to import them as Argentina in th 1850s, during an interval when all of Europe was engulfed in war, and the Americans were mixing it up with Mexico.
