Playing for the first time in a while and decided for only the second time to play as Mali.

As well as gradually consolidating control of West Africa and building links to other Muslim powers (allied to the Ottoman Empire) I colonised Northern Brazil, or 'Western Mali'. The first game I played as Mali I did thus and came into conflict with Spain and Portugal, so got clobbered. This time the British are in Southern Brazil and there is a small French colony .

France is not a great power; most of France is under British or Spanish control and there is internal religious conflict among the French.

But that is background. My stupid colonists have raised only 1,000 soldiers to protect what must be about 20 tiles. Invasion by an alliance of native tribes seems inevitable and although this is my colony state I seem unable to intervene.

How much money do they have ? you might need to subsidise them until they make enough money for a bigger army.

I've tried giving them money, I assume they spent it on something else.

Between Western Mali and the tribe in the NE corner of Brazil is an arc of four tiles. Three of these are French colonies, the fourth is colony that fails. If when it fails Western Mali attempts to colonise then the tribe declares war. If I colonise then they don't. But I will have to abandon before it completes and becomes part of Western Mali. I must keep abandoning in the hope the French will colonise before Western Mali do, and France is a few scattered provinces with little power.

Can't you use the "Enforce Peace" option on the tribe attacking your colony? Either they accept (and the war is over) or they refuse, and you join the war on the side of your colony (and stomp the tribe, presumably).

Enforce peace resulted in them ceding a third of their provinces to the tribes.

A sudden injection of funds allowed them to raise an army, but too late and they were defeated and ceded a third of their provinces.

Mali giving Western Mali freedom (Brazil) and then declaring war and achieving a 99% score resulted in Mali taking control of most provinces. But as soon as I core some provinces we're back to Malian Brazil, or New Mali.

Is there no way to influence the policies an governance of colonies; change the governor, influence the speed of expansion, provide a garrison or insist on the colony maintaining a defence force no smaller than a set minimum size.

Or perhaps there could be a graduation of control over colonies; thinking of the relationship with colonies and puppets in HOI4.

I had to create a separate Malian Casus Belli against the Tupinamba. Then declare war on them after they declared war on Western Mali (okay I initially named it Mali West) and then continue the separate Malian war after Western Mali surrendered in their war. Bonkers . . .
