It took me a few years to finally have an alliance with France, only for my colonial nation to attack France's colonial nation and dragging both of us in a war against each other.

I insult the colonial nation and manage to white peace with France and get another alliance, but the idiots in South America decide to repeat this stunt a few years later.

Is there any way to stop this from happening ? I found that in 1.7, by electing bureacrats, they tend to focus on colonization, rather than war. Now it is luck of the draw if they are smart or stupid.

When it happens, don't white peace. Just annihilate and conquer that colonial nation entirely (the french one). They won't hate you for it as the AI doesn't really care about subjects that far away and the aggressive expansion is minimal.

Otherwise, they will keep fighting. If you can't beat France in a war, then I'd recommend just giving them your colonial nation instead.

Shouldn't there have been a modifier for both colonial nations that says "Can't go to war with colonial nation of liege's ally" or something like that to prevent these kind of things in the first place?

This sounds like a logical thing to do. I could understand allies dragging you into a war against another ally, but this is ridiculous.

Colonial nations really ought to have to consult you before they declare war on anything
It's not like a real colonial viceroyalty wouldn't have bothered asking their superiors before going to war

Easy to annihilate the colonial nation but I became warleader against France, the colonial nations were just sorting it out amongst themselves while I had to fight France. Problem is not if I could beat France (I think I could) but that I wanted to keep my alliance for a few decades longer as I had some other plans before going into France. You say they don't care but it took me 5 years before I managed to get an alliance with FR again...

I can understand them attacking small local nations on their own. When they unleash worldwar 0.1 over a 1 bt province in the middle of the pampa then it seems a bit over the top :)

And then there is another thing which I cannot figure out.

When my colonial nation starts a war with a colonial nation of GB for example, one time I get called into the war, another time I do not.

When will I be called in and when will I not ?

While I can sympathize with the OP, I leaning towards leaving it the way it is. they are colonial nations that are really self autonomous.

I could see attaching this type of behavior to liberty desire though. For example, at high liberty desire CNs are more likely to disregard the fact that their overlord is allied to the overlord of an enemy CN. This would drag the two overlords into war thus weakening one or both which makes it easier for CN independence. Alternatively, at low liberty desire the CN should be less likely to attack your allies CNs.
