So my ruler died as I was upgrading to the next level of government. I'm now stuck without a ruler and I can't elect a new one. Any way to fix this?

No it just says next election ruler death. Do military dictatorship get access to emergency elections?
That's a pretty interesting bug there. Mind sharing the save file, so we can check it out for ourselves? Maybe it can be fixed manually.

if switching doesn't fix it I'll put the save up tomorrow. Going to try switching to one of the governments with an election every 10 years.
That might be a problematic situation unique to military dictatorship, due to been the only autocratic government with an election at ruler death, instead of an heir, while also been the only government with election that doesn't have emergency election.

I actually just had this same error happen to me, though what exactly happened in my case is one of the two candidates for leadership died during the election process, but was the one chosen at random as I didn't have enough influence to choose. Now I have an empty ruler slot, waiting for a blank to die to elect a new one.

How? You can't switch from a military dictatorship to democracy in Stellaris without mods. Right?
You can as long as you are neither collectivist or individualist.

I'm not sure if blank can die. I played for at least 50 years with no ruler.
I'm a militaristic xenophobic spiritualist. The gods say it's fine to be Democratic as long as we still kill aliens.

Yea sound like I'll have to change government whenever I can finally save up enough influence...
