This is what happened:-
1) I plotted to fabricate a claim on a duchy in which I have a county. The plot was one of those available in and was activated through the plot menu near the factions button.
2) At the intrigue screen I found two ambition events which I could use - if I had plot power above a certain level and certain number of people backing me, I could activate those events and have a certain percentage of success.
3) Success. But the plot remains there (now against myself since I am the new duchy holder) and I couldn't cancel it since it is active.
I have a save which I could upload if that is needed.
