The war goal system is rather ridiculous, I'm at war with empire A for their planets along with their allies Empire B & C, Empire D is also at war with empire A and ends up annexing empire A. I can no longer achieve my war goals but I still have to fight empire B & C? It makes no sense as empire A no longer exists, so I'm wasting time and resources for a white peace. Not to mention all the times people forget to set these goals at the start.

What's the logic in this system? Is it just to be different from Eu4? I understand that wars are a lot more damaging in Stellaris but who or what exactly is forcing me to follow my war goals in a game play sense? It's not like EU where we need permission from the pope or something.

It sounds like B & C are just ticked off in general, and are doing it "to the pain!"

It makes sense in a story sense. That being said, with Empire A gone, you should be able to shift your war goals.

These are the kinds of things you need to account for when going to war, whether somebody else might suddenly jump in and steamroll the opponent. That happened to me once when I was planning on "annexing" an empire by liberating it one planet at a time and vassalizing the resulting nations (I was a pacifist xenophile). The problem was their last world was attacked by a shifty nation also neighboring them, and I couldn't attack them for various reasons.

I do agree that this sort of thing needs to be accounted for in the warscore system, however. If the enemy nation loses a planet, that should count as warscore for you since they've technically lost it during the war.

Or B&C actually have war goals to force if they win. If B&C have nothing to gain now that empire A has been knocked out of the game than meditate on the wisdom of Rule of Acquisition 76 and surrender.

Well, if empires B and C have set wargoals against you then then why should the war end?
Just becuse war started over you atacking empire A doesn't mean that this is the only thing this war is about.

When it comes to wargoal system, I like it, but there can be improvements
(in defensive wars you should get the menu for setting wargoals when you are atacked, instead of little notification, and you should be able to change wargoals using influence)
but when it comes to diferent CB/wargoals in paradox games, it's my second favorite(my favorite would be one in Vic2) and, in my opinion, best for stellaris' scope.

I understand they have war goals set but the only reason they got involved was to defend A, A is completely gone now and I was friendly with B & C before this conflict yet I still have to slog through it.

At the very least we should be able to sign a separate peace with empires so long as they're not fighting as part of a federation.

And yeah I really like that idea of altering with influence.
