Hi, just a little idea for some distant future. Since there are already districts in place, what about doing something similar for roads? Give them random (editable) names when first built and put street name signs on the corners? Would add a lot to the atmosphere and doesn't really sound impossible to code.
And to build on that - freeway exit signs with the names of nearest districts.
Again the possibilities would be infinite (integration with public transport, adding the street names to the "twitter" info birdie thingy and so on... But these mechanics would be the basics :)

that would be awesome to personalize your city, as I mentioned oh so many times before.
hope the devs want to implement it... or some good modder could make that.

(as bridge naming etc)

If every person is to be accounted for they should have an address to where they live. You have option to create your own street name like Main or Queen st. If not the computer can randomly select a name alphabetically starting from one street in the A then the next street in the B category's . For eg. Alpha, Beta, Computer street and so on up to Z. Then it starts all over again in the A category
You can't use the same address name unless its in another town or city. Just like in the real world.
I think street names are a powerful tool for keeping stats on where people live and where they have to go.

I like the idea of (editable) auto-generated street names, but I think it wouldn't be too hard to expand on that for some other logical additions: if you place a school, you should see the normal 'children on road' signs pop up either side of it; a railway crossing or sharp corner on the road should spawn the appropriate warning signs too.

Or you could go full-on 'mad county council' and add a tool to spraypaint the word "SLOW" on the road wherever you clicked :D

Adding street and road signs wherever you want would be really cool. And painting roads in the way you like, as well.[/QUOTE

I never thought of painting the roads the way we want. In North America our roads are painted differently from European roads. Before using the road icon they should have an icon button stating which Continental road system do you want to use. Giving us the choices we want for road systems.
Having a icon button that you can put the map tile in street map style mode so you can see the overall streets names from above. Would be good idea so you can get a glimpse of all the street names. Just in case if you need to find an address etc.

Since Australia is a British settlement the city I live in which is Melbourne, many of streets are named after British nobility like "Elizabeth street". Here they really like to name streets and locations after people, the tennis arena is named after a famous Australian tennis player "Rod Laver". It would be really cool to name things to make the city feel like your own, this feature could be complimented by the "Chirper". Having a cutsom major account for chirper like @mayor_noob. AMY SMITH @mayor_noob The traffic on "ImSoAwesome st is terrible, please fix #trafficjam"

Hence every home has a small box with Information about The Status and the education level of The inhabitants, The game should add the chosen street name and a following street number, that would be so cool.
Every now and then, when youre stalking one of your citizens, youre able to get an individual adress (which will change if you rename The steet). Adding the name of The district would be the cherry on The cream.

Hehe yea it wouldn't probably have huge impact on game mechanics, that's why I said distant future :D. But cmon, looking at a bus stations list with all the street names and making screenshots from Wall Street would be just amazing.

I would admit it would be cool to see your Downtown area named with 1st to Nth street and A-Z street like most downtown cities.
Meh, generic names for artificial cities. We have multiple threads discussing what does a city make feel alive, such names certainly wouldn't help.

Well that's why you would be able to rename them, the default generic name would be just a filler (or leave the names blank by default, works too). I really think it would make a huge difference to the feel, you could ie. just re-create the place you live in IRL or any other place you (don't) like... Many people strive realism in city builders, this would be pretty powerful imo :)

The problem is that the engine doesn't recognize a street as a street. In CiM2 the names of "streets" were generated but the "street" only runs from one intersection to the next whereupon it is given a new name.

There was some discussion of this on another thread and someone suggested a painting tool to overcome this limitation and one of the devs responded favorably to the post and said they would look into it. Although, IMO, this would get tedious rather quickly.

it has not to get to deep, I think the first stage is just eyecandy: just like in SC4, being able to tag a street with an name, if you wish so.
Next stage could be that the streetnaming has an effect to houses and Cim's homes (getting an adress) or anouncing special event with an street name nearby. like a parade down Main Street or sth like that.

it would be lovely to have custom-named bridges, public buildings, schools etc. But the street naming is in my opinion the backbone of "your very personal" city

That's rather subjective. There are many real cities that have numbered and lettered streets that feel very much alive. New York City is probably the most obvious example.

Ah thx for the info Steve, guess there are just absolutely no new ideas that CO hasn't heard of before :D. That's a good point, handling intersections would be a problem. A painting tool working the same way districts/zones do sounds awesome, I guess the code has to be kinda in there already, since some of the policies do actually impact streets. Oh well let's see! :)

I would be satisfied with a Sim City 4-like (with extension) road naming without any more gameplay connection. It's definitely far more immersive and not impossible to code (not to mention that the game engine wouldn't be too slowed)
