Strategies for Norway in 1.8

Ok, I read all this and decided to try Norway for my-self. Feel free to comment and critique as you see fit

A gamey tactic that can be used is to declear war on Denmark together with Sweden, then steal provinces from Denmark (the ones in southern Sweden and in Denmark itself+Holstein) but remain under the PU because no coalition will form while you are a subject. So basically you get lots of free provinces while enjoying the protection of both Denmark and Sweden. Then one day the union either dissolves by itself or you fight your way out and now you are much more powerful than you started out as.

Yes... but I dont like this myself as you lose out on so much by staying in union and it slow you down too much. AE from taking low basetax provinces in scandinavia is small now.

Taking provinces in Skåne (southern sweden) in the initial independence war is risky as they are swedish cores. If Sweden attack while you core them then progress stops and you must fight a long war with overextension as well as low legitimacy. Better to grab some land in Jylland and an island or two. If you take 6+ basetax with danish culture from Denmark right away (in addition to demanding independence for yourself and sweden) you get danish as accepted culture right away. This is my opening move now, fast and effective.

Hmm. Have you tried it? I just cant see it working. You have to make sure you are the one sieging the provinces you want to take, not Hansa or Sweden. That can be done, but then you got a 10-15 year truce doing nothing, wich is a waste of opportunity. If you get independence you can use that time to completely break up Sweden instead, it is just a lot faster and does not create any dangerous coalitions if you are careful.

Tried it and it works Sweden will go after Danish stacks, and Danish stacks will always move into Sweden, so you can easily shuttle a few units to siege Denmark. The only thing you need to spend money on is galleys to make sure Denmarks navy is supressed.
I can assure you, the provinces you take IN the union will easily outdo the ones you can take outside of it.

I've read some posts here saying that Norway gets an Explorer from National Ideas, but I don't see this in 1.8.1, just the increased colonization range and +1 colonist, or am I missing something?

Sorry, just read the EU4 wiki entry on Norway, it says:

"Call of our Forefathers

Can recruit Explorers and Conquistadors
+33% Colonial range"

This is Norway's 4th National Idea

I can see some benefit for doing it this way, but you dont get coalitions from taking out Sweden. Do what I suggested earlier in the thread, take most of finland but not all, release as a vassal, use their reconquest cb on sweden and annex sweden in 2nd war. Denmark can wait, especially if you took skane the first war. Also, what if Sweden declares independence before you can, then you'll get nothing in the peacedeal that you want, also. Those 15yrs of truce is a good time to take out novgorod, because if muscovy eat them, they'll be a pain for a good long while.

Heh, I just hate it when colonial nations go to war with each other. Oh look, Vinland just declared war on Newfoundland... time to unmothball those heavy ships and start shipping troops to Orkney...

This is Norway's 4th National Idea

As others have mentioned they do come a bit late. I'm trying to figure out when and how to strike out for the new world with Norway myself...
