France was fully formed (basically) until only a few years ago, at which point they got elected HRE, which made me (Byzantium) declare war, as the entire concept of an HRE is an affront to me, the true Roman Emperor. As a peace settlement, I converted them to Orthodoxy. And then all sorts of rebels started popping up, including many different nationalists and patriots, but also three different kinds of religious zealots (Catholic, Protestant, Reformed).
In addition many of the usual suspects of a France breakup via rebellion, beneficiaries have included the Papal State (Catholic zealots), Switzerland (Reformed zealots), and Bosnia (!) (Protestant zealots), which, between them, now essentially own central France - the Swiss in Orleanais, Bosnia in Berry, Anjou, and Poitou, and the Papal States in Cambray, Vermandois, Nemours, Maine, and Île-de-France (!).
At one point, things were so crazy that Catholic zealots (aligned with the Papal State) were occupying a Swiss French province, while Reformed zealots (aligned with Switzerland) were occupying a Bosnian French province, while Protestant zealots (aligned with Bosnia) were occupying a Papal State French province.
All in all, from its height, the following nations have either split off of or gained territory from France:
Additionally, there are currently:
- Alscace (split off)
- Armagnac (split off)
- Auvergne (split off, then gained)
- Avignon (split off)
- Bosnia (gained several times)
- Brittany (split off)
- Burgundy (split off, then gained several times)
- Dauphine (split off, then gained)
- Flanders (gained, and conquered Luxembourg)
- Liege (gained)
- Luxembourg (split off, then got conquered by Flanders)
- Navarra (split off, then gained)
- The Papal States (gained several times)
- Spain (gained)
- Switzerland (gained)
Plus, Brittany is still in their independence war, and has occupied Caux. And who knows what else is going on beyond the fog of war.
- Champagnian nationalists (they'll take Nemours, and are about to fight it out for Normandy)
- Cosmopolitaine patriots (aligned with Flanders, not France; they are about to fight for Normandy)
- Catholic zealots (Papal State - going to make Normandy a three way battle, and also occupying part of Bosnian France, plus a whole bunch of them heading towards Maine)
- Reformed zealots (Switzerland - occupying parts of Bosnian France)
- Protestant zealots (Bosnia - occupying Swiss France)
I was going to wait to post this followup until all of the rebellions quieted down, but I thought "Île-de-France defected to the Papal State" was too good to pass up.
