I think I have the reason. I've seen Venice take Thrace because of similar reasons. The Italians LOVE to guarentee the Greek Minors. Presumably, the Byzantines decided to DoW Achaea or Athens or someone round there, and the Papal States were guarenteeing them. In the subsequent war that broke out, the Byzzies got maimed and annexed.
Yes, but shouldn't it start in Bursa or something in Asia Minor? And then only move to Greece or Constantinople after they conquer it?

Historically, the Ottoman capital was in Edirne (Turkish name for Hadrianopolis). It was at a good strategic location, and in the middle of their Empire.
So the OE moved their capital again after they moved it to Bursa in 1326?
Yes. First from inner Anatolia to the coast of Marmaros, then to Hadrianopolis and later to Constantinople.
Actually, they gained a lot of prestige points in all three moves... ;-)

It was a relatively fresh French army, having only traveled through a couple of occupied non-schorched provinces and led by the lucky French king himself. I was trapped and couldn't get away before they reached me. I was amazed to see the dice rolls and decided to stay in for a few rounds. . . Needless to say, I wiped out all the retreaters. It was in the beginning of the war, so the French had no problems rebuilding, but I gained time to do some proper scorching.

They even had a better general
I'm not really sure. I was micro managing my troops around Navarra (you see my total army in the picture - France was fielding 100k when the next wave hit.) I only followed the battles from casualties count (determined to pull out when the tides turned.) The French must have had all their odds stacked against them.
I like playing Portugal as they are underdogs in most matters. The initial skirmish with France is inevitable and I have some nice experience with that. I often end up scorching all of the former Aragon (which haven't turned cores anyhow) This war I actually won and made France release a couple of vassal. (splitting the empire in 3
)
Did you have a unit level up on them in land tech by chance? I've seen that pretty often in Dutch games, where just having one tech level at the right moment gives you a new tier of units that just wreck your opponent.

When Crete formed the Bizantyne Empire, it was a Venice province

The Ottoman Empire converted most of Greece, so when the Byzantine Empire revolted from Crete, the game looked and said "Hey, most of the Byzantine cores are Sunni, so the Byzantines should be Sunni"
