The one that got its peace treaty in first when all of the HRE demesne was conquered was the republic of Bologna. The old emperor is still around as king of Burgundy and Italy but he only controls Provence and a handful of other provinces scattered around the empire.

Nah, it's prolly the shortest route, that does not go through moslem territory. That yellow in the between could easily be Seljuks and if he isn't at war with any moslem, he can't walk through moslem territories.
i saved and then reloaded to see if it would fix, but they kept on declaring war on itself, but the empire is slowly falling apart. it happens with other nations in the game also. i noticed amisid, or something like that doing it too. could it be something in the beta patch and i should post there, or is it intended?

Holy crud. I thought in the Hundred Years War scenario, which it looks like you're playing, the Mongols didn't go on giant campaigns like that.... guess I was wrong.
I remember just after the game had been released, someone saw the Horde conquer all the way to France, and then invade England. Damned if I can find the thread, though.
I've no screenshot (i'll try to do one) but i've already granted a bishopric to a dead man ! I have been forced to use the "die" command on him later to prevent possible crashes… gloomy !!! the Addams Family in the Middle Ages

It's still possible to do that sometimes even with the beta.
