Perhaps he displayed cowardice by refusing single combat, having the opponent shot down by archers instead.

Earlier I posted a screenie of my Bigamous Count of Napoli Sergios Spartenos (the Elder) - well in this game I went on to conquer Salerno, Capua, and Islamic Sicily becoming Prince of Campania, and Sicily.
Next thing i knew - bing - Sergios (the Elder) was his Imperial Majesty ruler of Byzantium. Yay.
However I spent the next 10 years expelling a Turk invasion, and crushing rebellious vassals and by the time i was done my old Emperor was 52 years old. Near the end of his life (during his life he lost his two wives to childbirth and remarried Mayor Jiminez of Navarra) so i saved it and just as i did so their was a spontaneous revolt of Trebizond, Chaldea, Sinope, Armenian Minor, and Nikomedia all at once and then right then old Sergios his Imperial Majesty died ending my game. Boo.
So i reloaded the game as the Principality of Campania (which was ruled by Sergios Spartenos (the younger) ) and used what time i had left of daddy dearest being Emperor to wrest the titles Prince of Apulia and Calabria from the De Hautevilles.
The war went well and Sergios (the younger) became King in Naples - and I began sharing out titles to the De Hautevilles to ensure the loyalty of this very talented family.
EDIT: Also upon reload the Elder Spartenos has lived about 7 years longer than he did before. :wacko: And the Eastern Rebellions didnt occur.
It was then I noticed that Roger De Hauteville (formerly Count of Reggio) had converted to Orthodoxy somewhere along the way and was now Prince of Calabria.
That was something i didnt expect. :wacko:

I'm currently playing Germany. I declared war to Venice, which owned, apart it's capital, several provinces in "future" Yougoslavia. All i had a claim for was Venice province. They accepted peace... Then Venice Republic was installed in Belgrade.... :rofl:

It might sound unusual at first, but it's part of the normal religious homogenization process of rulers in a realm. In other words, there exists an event to make the vassal rulers realize that it's actually better for your long term prosperity to adopt your liege's faith instead of sticking to your own.
