At some point in my playthrough, the county of Rome was taken over by a nord adventurer (it's still norse and pagan), but I haven't been able to take it back through regular means (papal or holy war).

Instead, I'm only given the option to do a papal war for the duchy of Latium... which belongs to a Duke in Lombardy, not the nord adventurer. Winning the war does nothing: the duchy stays in the hands of whichever duke had it before, and the adventurer is still sitting pretty in Rome. If I go back to the declare war window, I can keep doing the same Papal war for the same Duchy over and over again.

I've uploaded 5 screenshots here: https://imgur.com/a/7yywTT8

With the first three, you can see that save for the county capital (Tusculum), every other holding belongs to the papacy (the mayor of Viterbo is a vassal of the Pope). The adventurer isn't anyone's vassal and only owns a single holding and county.

On the 4th one, I have the (presumably) bugged war option. My character is fully catholic and can holy war other religious rulers just fine.

On the 5th one, I show the Duchy of Latium, in the hands of a vassal of the King/Queen of Lombardy (it's been this way for centuries)

As it stands, every time my emperor dies, the new one has to go on a papal war that does nothing to get crowned, because the pope complains about being landless. He stays landless and the cycle continues.

I haven't tried fabricating a claim on Rome, it might get me out of this mess, but my council is full of powerful king vassals and I'll have to eject one to get a competent chancellor (they all have trash stats). It's an ironman save, so I don't really want to take too many risks. (I'd rather fight a 1.5K adventurer every 30 years than face a potential rebellion from a 10k vassal...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Edit: I bit the bullet and fabricated a claim on Rome. It allowed me to conquer it, then give it back to the Pope.

I have just run into the same problem, and found that when I declare a "Papal War" and win it, every holding in the respective area that is NOT occupied by me got transferred to the Pope.

That means the less you conquer, the better for Mr. Pope.

Something is not right here.

I did my first Papal war last night- it was for Benevito which was holding Rome, but most of Benevito stayed as Benevito after I'd won- didn't see if anything moved but I am not sure now!
