I was skimming through the manual when I noticed the following section on religion:

• Catholic – The state can convert to Protestant or Reformed. The tolerance
of Catholic is +1 and tolerance of others is -1. You may enter into Papal politics.
Possible heretics include: Bogomilist, Waldensian, Fraticelli, Hussite, Lollard, and
Socinian.
• Protestant – The state can convert to Catholic or Reformed. You receive a
global tax modifier of +10%, and Idea costs of -10%. Possible heretics include:
Pentacostal, Puritan, and Congregationalist.
• Reformed – The state can convert to Catholic or Protestant. You will enjoy a
global trade proficiency of +10%, and an increased Advisor pool. Possible heretics
include: Methodist, Baptist, and Quaker.

Do these groupings strike anyone else as being somewhat odd? I guess it's all academic since heresies don't pop up very often; however, I wanted to see what you thought.

The heresies are identical as in CK2 (for the religions that are in CK2). I don't have a problem with them, at least there will be different kind of them instead of just "heresy" province modifier.

And if I may OT a little... When I saw this in the manual:
Idea costs of -10%
I was sure which religion most of my countries will have :)

Some of them are a bit odd. For example, wouldn't Puritans just be represented as Reformed? Or am I off-base on that?

As far as my limited knowledge of religion goes the puritans are a more "radical" branch of the English protestants but not radical enough to be considered a reformed heresy.

I didn't mean a Reformed heresy. I meant just Reformed. My understanding was that they wanted the English Church to be Reformed and that is what made them radical. I'm not an expert though.

Wikipedia says the following:

"Puritans adopted a Reformed theology and in that sense were Calvinists (as many of their earlier opponents were, too), but also took note of radical views critical of Zwingli in Zurich and Calvin in Geneva."

I think it would make more sense to have the puritans as reformed :unsure:

You have to remember how the game handles rebels. They're "Protestant" rebels and not "Reformed" rebels because they have to spawn in Protestant England or Great Britain. The Church of England is "Protestant" in EU3 and presumably EU4, so that has to be the base from which they split. If you made them Reformed heretics, they would only appear in a Reformed province. Unlike CK2, you won't be able to convert to these heresies, they exist solely to cause trouble and be squashed.

Puritans were radical in a lot of other ways. Without getting into any gory (or just plain weird) details, let's just say there was a reason no one in Europe wanted them around.
