Strange Crash problem

I went to start a previous Iron man game that I just started. Loaded fine and started to play normally, after a month or could be days the game music stopped and the map froze. I could click on counties or armies so long as they were on the map but no menu item would work. As the map was frozen I could not scroll anywhere. I couldn't even quit. I got the menu up by pressing esc but no options would work.

This game is being played with just official DLC, played really well before so can't really say what is happening. I checked the task manager and no other background programs are running. I verified the game files and all came back ok. I have a played a game right through untill the end in 1452/3 before and did not have one problem.

Under what patch was that old Ironman game started? We can't 100% guarantee compatibility across major patches.

Also, try the new beta. In Steam right-click on CK2 and select Properties. Hit the Beta tab and choose 2.2.1.3 from the list there; once that update is done try your game again.

Thanks for replying. I was using the latest patch, I did not change anything. I was only using official DLC as well. I did not before you got in the game and when in a game if you were to have scrolled the mouse upwards a line would appear. I am running Win 7 64 bit with 32 GB of memory, I7-3740QM CPU running dual graphics, Intel 400 or Nvidia GTX 680. As I said this has never happened before.
I have tried the 2.2.1.3 beta and the game seems to run fine, bit concerned that I might now have lost some previous saves I had going.

One thing I did notice in 2.2.1.3 is that when you click on the two wedding rings below a portrait to either arrange a betrothal or a marriage when you select a partner it takes you to the wrong screen, You have to do it via diplomacy and is a bit long winded.

Sorry to double post but thought I would add an update. Last night playing with the new beta I had a few good hours play and thought the problem had been solved but I have just started up the same game and a few days in and the music stopped once again and map froze, all menu items would not work. I had to CTRL+ALT to get out.

I still can't see anything interfering with Steam or the game in the background so am at a loss once again. Be grateful for any advice.


Update. I have just spent hours trying to fix this and am getting nowhere fast. I deleted all non official content from the game having unsubscribed first of course. I then deleted all my old save games just in case and finally deleted local content and reinstalled, booted the game up and crashed. It seems to freeze randomly but not far into a game, it is a new game btw not a saved one. So I quit and put the beta on start the game and freezes again randomly but not far into the game. Sometimes it is a days or just over a month.

When the game is working at the start if you scroll up and down you get like a line/crease from left to right across the screen that disappears as soon as you stop scrolling. Not sure if this is meant to be here or not. When the game does freeze the game is still advancing I noticed, you can also pause and unpause. You can even bring the console up but you cannot type anything in. The menu's do not work, you can click on a county and the info comes up as normal but not interact with anything. This complete freeze happens now in every game I try to start. 5 on the trot so far.

I have tried running malware software, spybot ETC and did an online virus check and everything is clean, I gave you my system specs above but cannot seem to solve the problem. Could it be the Win7 64 bit or perhaps a memory problem where the game isn't access my memory?

As I said I have played the game from start to finish before so can't see it is my machine causing any problems. Is there a fault with some of the DLC? I really hope you can help as I play this game a lot (or did) and want to go on purchasing download content.

PS While looking round for crash reports (couldn't find it) I found an error report in the logs folder, C:\Users\Crowsy\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\logs and while the date and time corresponded with the last time I played I thought I would post up the data in it.

Please try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

IF that doesn't help Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log . Open setup.log in notepad and search for 'checksum', post that line only here too please.

I will do that thank you. I might have stumbled on a fix myself. Not sure though as I didn't get long playing the game. I was looking around the options to see if there was anything amiss. I saw in the options that my game was running in 'borderless' mode so I changed that option to 'Fullscreen', didn't think it would do much but when I tried to start a new game that glitch I said had gone. The glitch where when I scrolled up I would get like a line across the screen and that would disappear when you stopped scrolling after I had changed to fullscreen that had disappeared.

In the game I had started it played like before and I even managed to progress a couple of years before I stopped playing but no crash. I am going to try to play it today for a couple of hours just to see if it is stable but would you think this could have cured the problem? I haven't changed this in the past so no idea why it is a problem now. Or should I proceed with your directions?

Still waiting for a crash but haven't had one, it does look like changing the 'borderless' option to 'fullscreen' did the trick.
