Chapter 502
Cirano pushed his men as much as he dared. Time was of the essence but a fatigued army wouldn't do him any good either. Before leaving for Kedah, he got all the information he could get regarding the capital itself. If he wanted an even battlefield, he needed to know how to get into the city and the weakness of the city defenses. There was a possibility for the rebels to close the gate to halt the advances of the Nuova Italians. This scenario would actually benefit Cirano since, if the rebels had failed to take the inner walls yet, they would be stretched even thinner to defend themselves against his men.
The Nuova Italian army soon arrived outside the city where Cirano took a moment to study the city walls. There were no men stationed on the walls and the gates were left opened since the rebels broke through the outer defenses. He led his men into the city which they were greeted by a scene of massacre. The rebel soldiers, lacking any discipline to speak of, pillaged the capital and killed all those who stood in their path. The scene was quite grueling but Cirano and his men simply didn't have the luxury to stop. They had to stop the noble rebels at all cost before the lives of the royalty were threatened.
As the Nuova Italian army closed in onto the inner sectors of the capital, they could hear the war cries of the rebels who were still assaulting the inner walls. Their corpses along the base of the walls just showed how unsuccessful they had been but Cirano wasn't about to let them have the luxury of attacking whenever they felt like it. The Nuova Italian army was split into two groups with one heading left and the other right. The attack from the rear was already enough to disrupt the rebel formation but the fierce charge of the Nuova Italian soldiers actually routed the majority of the rebel soldiers. Victory was certainly within grasp.
The nobles who instigated the rebellion were later arrested and were executed on the spot. Cirano was surprised when one of them told him and his men about the hidden agenda of the Kedah ruler. Apparently, the Kedah ruler had been plotting to rebel against the Republic once all his preparations were made. The nobles were merely trying to prevent a catastrophe from happening with this rebellion but Nuova Italia intervened where they shouldn't have. Others present thought little of this accusation but Cirano definitely had his suspicions of the Kedah ruler, especially the king's response when he was rescued.
