Ah, Majapahit. The alliance with them has always been a strange one, one more of convenience than any strategic purpose.

Majapahit is finally western. We should celebrate.
They have embraced the glorious ways of the Nouvo Italians! They are just one small step from being another part of our glorious nation. Sounds like it may be time for some surprise Anschluss!

Contact at last! A glorious day indeed.

It's about time the Europeans know about Nuova Italia and her might! :p

Ah, Majapahit. The alliance with them has always been a strange one, one more of convenience than any strategic purpose.

Contact with Europe at last. Soon the Nuova Italians will reconnect with their ancestors in Naples.

Not sure how those in Naples will react to their long lost brothers. :p

Majapahit is finally western. We should celebrate.

Well, we won't be celebrating if they get any ideas about Nuova Italian lands.

They have embraced the glorious ways of the Nouvo Italians! They are just one small step from being another part of our glorious nation. Sounds like it may be time for some surprise Anschluss!

I'm not sure if we desired their lands that much. :p

Chapter 497

A series of changes was brought about the Republic as the Doge introduced new policies. The Republic had, since her birth, heavily relied on merchants to grow her wealth and power over the decades. The Aristocrat Faction had been growing weaker over the years and the Guilds and Traders factions grew significantly stronger with the more opportunities presenting themselves as new places were explored. The series of changes would, as a result, have limited impact on the existing government since the oppositions were few in numbers overall.

With limited oppositions, the Doge had no problems introducing the ideas and the policies that came with them. While no one openly said it in public, the Republic was slowly becoming something of a plutocracy where the wealthy were in power. The Traders and Guilds factions were constantly competing for more wealth because wealth determined how much power and influence they controlled in the Republic. Luckily, these competitions never really transitioned to large scale conflicts where a civil war could easily destroy the Republic from within.

Bloodshed had occurred in the past but the situation was looking up over the last decade or so. No one knew what Michelangelo was thinking since no one ever got a chance to speak with him anymore. All anyone knew was that his policies took drastic turns as he began taking approaches which were vastly different from his old decisions. Whether old age or some significant event changed his life, the Doge was definitely plotting a slightly different course for Nuova Italia. Most of the benefits would only occur in the long-term so no one expected to see actual results until a few generations later.

The first set of policies would significantly impact the Republic's ability to wage war. Nuova Italia had grown steadily over the years with more wealth in her treasury and more manpower from the larger population base. The larger manpower was significant but everyone was aware that the men who became soldiers could be working in towns and cities to maintain high productivity there. Their absence meant slower growth overall which made wars not the most ideal situation when the Republic was experiencing massive growth. Michelangelo introduced the new policies to deal with that exact situation.

While recruiting soldiers from the Nuova Italian population affected the overall growth, there was always the alternative option of mercenaries. It certainly wasn't a new concept to use mercenaries from foreign nations since their loyalty remained with those who paid them the highest price. Other parts of Asia weren't as fortunate as the Southeast Asia as war torn nations saw more people struggling to make a living. These conflicts saw a rise of mercenaries as more people were desperate to do anything to survive. By tapping into these available mercenary pools, the Republic could let more of her people remain home to live long and productive lives.

When Sinibaldo returned back to Sumatra after making contact with the Portuguese and Castilian trade ports, he immediately resigned from his position. No one knew the exact cause of his resignation except his family members who chose to not share the reason with the public. The top Nuova Italian officials were shocked by this development but no one could exactly say no to the explorer. However, there was the matter where they couldn't find any explorers to replace Sinibaldo for the time being. The exploration fleet was, for the time being, without a leader or objective so it was sent to join the trade fleet in Hangzhou.

Before the exploration fleet began its new assignment, they were upgraded in the port as new shipbuilding methods were developed since they were built. In the past, the main objective was to get the exploration fleet out at sea as often and quickly as possible which resulted in no upgrades until this day. With no more urgency, the ships finally got proper upgrades to meet the same standards of the other Nuova Italian ships. As soon as the upgrades were done, they were sent out at once and, with the experienced crew and captains aboard, the ships reached Hangzhou in no time to merge with the trade fleet.

The Hangzhou area was growing rapidly to become one of the largest trading hubs in China. In recent years, the Chinese states were growing more stabilized as fewer conflicts were taking place. This allowed places like Hangzhou to develop rapidly seeing more goods entering and leaving the trading hub. With the local waters much safer due to patrolling Chinese navies, Nuova Italian trade fleets could operate in the waters with less worry. Their goal was to direct more trade from this area back to Sumatra and, being veterans, they were accomplishing what they were set out to do.

Chapter 498

The Kedah messenger had two soldiers protecting his rear but they gave him no comfort when he saw the contingent of cavalry chasing after him. He carried an important message which he must deliver across the border into Nuova Italian provinces but the pursuers looked to put an end to that plan. The two soldiers were the last of his bodyguards as the others had perished by attempting to delay the pursuers the best they could. Their efforts had, so far, been in vain as the cavalry contingent hadn't been slowed at all. If anything, it seemed like they were closing the distance with each passing seconds.

Soon, the last two soldiers would have to sacrifice themselves but, against the overwhelming odds they faced, the messenger doubted they could do much. His horse was getting fatigued and the pursuers had horses bred to travel long distances without getting tired as easily. The messenger only wished he knew how close he was to the border but he hadn't have any opportunities to check where he was at. The pursuers had been relentless thus far and they didn't look like they were going to stop until they got the messenger's head on a spear. An idea the messenger would rather not think about.

The two soldiers soon broke from the formation to take on the enemies but their efforts were as pitiful as a fly trying to stop a horse. The messenger was alone and the pursuers would soon get their hands on him. Just when he lost all hope, the messenger noticed a contingent of cavalry ahead of him. Their armor worn by them suggested they belonged to Nuova Italia which gave him hope for the first time since he left the Kedah capital. He shouted to get their attention and the Nuova Italian cavalrymen did look in his direction. However, they were still uncertain what was transpiring in this situation.

The pursuers soon pulled out their bows and began firing at the messengers. A few came close to killing him but not all the pursuers were experts in archery. A few of them completely missed the mark and nearly hit the Nuova Italian cavalry. The Nuova Italian cavalrymen weren't too pleased to be shot at so they charged to intercept the incoming Kedah rebel cavalrymen. The two sides fought it out briefly before they withdrew to their respective sides. The messenger was saved and he was immediately escorted to the nearest city where his message could be heard by a Nuova Italian official.

Seeing that I'm about to hit chapter 500, I am open to what people want me to write about for this special. This won't be a massive update but I don't mind fleshing something out that happened in the past. Feel free to make suggestions and I'll pick one for the 500th chapter. Thank you all for your continued support. :)

I think something crazy and totally impossible would be cool. Perhaps an Italian nation was under attack, and after hearing about Nuova Italia, sends a group to request aid. Unfortunately, they had incorrect information and think Nuova Italia is somewhere south of Egypt. It could make for a fun, lighthearted adventure.

Some drama going on with Kedah? I honestly don't remember what happened with them at this point. :p

Well, they will be hogging the spotlight for awhile from what I seen so far. :p

That's definitely an unique idea. I'll keep it in mind when I do the 500th chapter. :)

Chapter 499

The Kedah messenger was brought before the official, Alviero, who had an ordinary day thus far. The new policies had been implemented without a hitch and the lives of the people went on like any other day. If Alviero had wanted more action in his day, he was about to get his wish as what the Kedah messenger brought was gloomy news for Alviero. Governing over the province bordering Kedah, what was transpiring in the small nation often had significant impact on the province, even if the Republic overall wasn't affected at all. Alviero allowed the messenger to speak while he listened carefully.

The messenger spoke of discontent nobles who were growing tired of the existing government. They not only felt their power and privileges were limited but the fact that Kedah was a protectorate of Nuova Italia was also an insult to their pride. Opposing the Republic would be a huge mistake unless they had the support of a nation which would make the Nuova Italian Doge think twice about intervening. After much work, the nobles managed to get the backing of Ayutthaya, a nation known to be a rival of the Republic for decades and had interests in the region as well.

With the backing of a strong nation, the nobles rallied their supporters who were numerous. Apparently, the Kedah ruler had done a poor job making his people happy so, once the nobles spread a few lies, he suddenly found himself facing an enormous rebel army. The nobles were no pushovers since they owned plenty of wealth which allowed them to get their soldiers the best weapons and armor ducats could buy. The garrison in the capital were defeated decisively at the outer walls but they were holding out somewhat in the inner walls as they stood between the rebels and the Kedah ruler.

The messenger was able to sneak out with a small escort during the night but they were later spotted by rebel soldiers who were stationed by the road. The rebels gave pursuit and could have had his head if the Nuova Italian patrol hadn't been in the right place at the right time. Alviero allowed the messenger to finish before he excused himself. The official understood what could happen if the nobles were successful and he didn't exactly have time to inform the Doge of the situation. He had to take action before the Kedah ruler fall into the hands of the rebels. Alviero quickly summoned his military officers.

One more day before the 500th update so, if you have any ideas, just post it. There's already one interesting one so far but I don't mind having options.

Chapter 500

Naples was about to participate in a bloody campaign unlike any the nation had experienced in the past and her monarch was worried about the future of his nation. Since breaking free from her former overlord, Naples had made few friends while more time was still needed to turn Naples into a great power in Europe. Recently, the political landscape was changing rapidly across Europe as Protestantism and Reformed took many regions by storm. The rise of heretical beliefs meant conflicts were inevitable in Europe and Naples soon found herself being pulled into what could be the largest religious conflicts in recent history.

The situation in Europe was escalating rapidly as the league war looked inevitable. The two sides were gathering supporters for their cause and Naples was naturally included. Joining the side of the Catholics, Naples would soon be participating in a war of unprecedented scale. The Neapolitan monarch feared how the conflict could affect Naples so he wanted more allies to either support Naples by sending soldiers or resources like ducats and supplies. During an ordinary discussion with his eldest son, the monarch was reminded of a Nuova Italia which was something of a myth at the time.

Merchants from Asia spoke of a Catholic nation which was flourishing in Asia. This seemed to conflict with their report of numerous Muslim nations in the region too since the Muslim nations Europeans know about were mostly in the Middle East and North Africa regions. In the past, Europeans did believe a Christian nation led by Prestor John existed amidst the Muslims and Pagans somewhere in the east in a place called India. Following the invasion of the Mongols, the Europeans were starting to doubt this location with their focus eventually turning to the region south of Egypt called Ethiopia.

The Neapolitan monarch firmly believed a Christian nation existed in the Ethiopian region and this might be the Nuova Italia he had been hearing about all those years in myths. Because heathens stood between the region and Europe, contact had been nonexistent so there were no confirmation of this myth. For the sake of Naples, the monarch was willing to fund an expedition to the Ethiopian region to confirm his belief. With the rumors claiming that Neapolitan people created Nuova Italia, he was confident they would send troops and resources to aid him if asked to.

The monarch's eldest son, Sabato, offered to lead the expedition because he was eager to be the first European to make contact with the famed Christian kingdom. Sabato had the theory where Prestor John began the Christian nation but the nation was encircled at all sides. It wasn't until the arrival of Neapolitan people that the nation was once again experiencing a golden age. This not only proved what the Neapolitan people were capable of in the face of adversity but also showed the potential they possessed in this world where only the strong could survive.

Sabato was chosen to head the expedition with several hundred men and considerable amount of ducats for the journey. They first traveled by boat to Egypt where a few bribes saw them getting through territory of The Mamluks with minimal problems. The problems arose when the expeditionary force arrived at The Mamluks-Ethiopian border when the Ethiopian border patrol mistaken Sabato and his men as trespassers. They were arrested and imprisoned for a month before they were given a chance to clear their name. While in prison, Sabato wondered about the fate of Naples.

Sabato was later given a chance to meet the Ethiopian monarch who was sincerely apologetic about the misunderstandings. Sabato and his men were then treated as valued guests and what had happened was all forgiven. It was two months since arriving in Ethiopia before Sabato shared the purpose of his visit. The Ethiopian monarch listened to what he had to say but said that it was not possible. To send soldiers or resources through Egypt to Europe was a difficult task considering the deteriorated relations between Ethiopia and The Mamluks, assuming the Ethiopian monarch was willing to do so in the first place.

The Ethiopian monarch did offer to pray for Naples in the conflict which might have started already. The Ethiopian nation would support Naples spiritually with the belief that God would watch over Naples in the fight against the vile heretics who turned their back to the Almighty. Sabato was thankful for what was being done and, out of curiosity, asked if the Ethiopian monarch heard the nation called Nuova Italia. He was astonished when he was told about the actual existence of Nuova Italia in the far east where it had managed to carve out a powerful nation amidst the heathen nations.

Sabato was eager to return with this discovery but the Ethiopian monarch was unwilling to let him go until he remained in Ethiopia for a year. He claimed this was the custom they maintained so Sabato had no choice but to oblige. That year was the longest year in his life because he was yearning to go home. Being in these parts where news of Europe never reached, he could only imagine how Naples was faring in the league war. There were some big nations involved and who knew how many innocent lives were lost in this fight for God and all he stood for.

The year had finally concluded and Sabato, with his few remaining followers who were willing head home, was finally traveling home. The Ethiopian monarch returned the ducats that were confiscated when they first arrived and was present during their departure. Sabato couldn't wait to share what he saw in Ethiopia and the actual existence of Nuova Italia but he never got a chance to even reach the Mediterranean. The Mamluks had experienced some serious internal turmoils which saw a civil war breaking out without warning. Sabato and his men, being caught in the conflict, were executed on the grounds of being spies.

Meanwhile, the Neapolitan monarch had long accepted the death of his son after a few months passed. He assumed the worst and suspected that the heathens in Egypt no doubt took their lives for the ducats they carried with them. A grave was made for the brave souls who went on the expedition and, a year later, the monarch committed suicide due to him blaming himself for the death of his eldest son. His second eldest song would become the new king of Naples and a new age would begin for the nation which had been spared the large conflict which was expected to happen.

The league war failed to take place due to a number of factors. First, the nations following heretical faiths were far fewer than the Catholic nations which saw a significant edge to the Catholics. Secondly, the Ottoman Empire had surprisingly sided with the Catholics as the heathen nation looked to attack Poland and Hungary which had became Protestant. These two factors, along with other minor reasons, saw the Protestant League back down with the conflict completely averted. As a result, the former Neapolitan monarch felt he sent his eldest son to his doom for absolutely no reason.

Sometimes it is hard to understand the mind of a genius. :D

FYI, Poland and Hungary weren't heretics but just traitors to their faith, not that there's much difference. Such is the nature of league wars. Fortunate that Nuova Italia is so far away and above such petty religious politics.

This chapter was hilarious at first, but it ended up being quite sad. Still enjoyable though. :)

At long as it's entertaining, I did my job. :)

Well, we know the world would be Protestant is we were in Europe. :D

Chapter 501

Alviero first dispatched a messenger to the Nuova Italian capital. He wrote in the message about how he took actions on his own decision due to the urgency of the matter. Alviero was certain that Doge Michelangelo would understand the entire situation. The two hour discussion with his military officers saw everyone in the room agreeing to the plan where they could dispatch all the soldiers they could spare to assist the Kedah capital. The garrison would remain in the city on the off chance some rebel groups decided to take advantage of the development.

The soldiers who were assembled for this mission weren't exactly the best soldiers the Republic could offer but they still had the minimal training to earn the uniform on them. Training for soldiers in Nuova Italia was some of the toughest in all of Asia so even the soldiers with minimal training were expected to excel on the battlefield against those who had little to some training. However, Alviero was more worried about logistics than the actual quality of his men. The Kedah messenger was clear that the Kedah royal family was threatened with very little time left.

There was also the matter regarding the exact numbers of the rebels. The messenger admitted that he didn't have an accurate number to go with since the outer walls fell so quickly. Yet, he hazarded a guess of around five thousand men because that was the estimated number of weapons the nobles might have stockpiled over the years. Alviero took a moment to look over the three thousand men who were assembled for this battle. He shouted to them if they were ready to face six thousand rebel soldiers and their response shook the room they were in. The soldiers weren't afraid of being outnumbered one bit.

Seeing his soldiers were ready, Alviero then assigned his brother, Cirano, as the head of this army. They would march at once as soon as they picked up the supplies which were waiting for them. Before the soldiers were fully assembled, Alviero had men prepare the food and supplies needed for this trip. The journey to the capital wouldn't be a long one but the soldiers must be prepared for whatever situation they might find themselves in. It was far better to be more prepared than be not ready for the challenges ahead of them. Alviero didn't want to think about the consequences of the noble rebels succeeding in their agenda.

Chapter 502

Cirano pushed his men as much as he dared. Time was of the essence but a fatigued army wouldn't do him any good either. Before leaving for Kedah, he got all the information he could get regarding the capital itself. If he wanted an even battlefield, he needed to know how to get into the city and the weakness of the city defenses. There was a possibility for the rebels to close the gate to halt the advances of the Nuova Italians. This scenario would actually benefit Cirano since, if the rebels had failed to take the inner walls yet, they would be stretched even thinner to defend themselves against his men.

The Nuova Italian army soon arrived outside the city where Cirano took a moment to study the city walls. There were no men stationed on the walls and the gates were left opened since the rebels broke through the outer defenses. He led his men into the city which they were greeted by a scene of massacre. The rebel soldiers, lacking any discipline to speak of, pillaged the capital and killed all those who stood in their path. The scene was quite grueling but Cirano and his men simply didn't have the luxury to stop. They had to stop the noble rebels at all cost before the lives of the royalty were threatened.

As the Nuova Italian army closed in onto the inner sectors of the capital, they could hear the war cries of the rebels who were still assaulting the inner walls. Their corpses along the base of the walls just showed how unsuccessful they had been but Cirano wasn't about to let them have the luxury of attacking whenever they felt like it. The Nuova Italian army was split into two groups with one heading left and the other right. The attack from the rear was already enough to disrupt the rebel formation but the fierce charge of the Nuova Italian soldiers actually routed the majority of the rebel soldiers. Victory was certainly within grasp.

The nobles who instigated the rebellion were later arrested and were executed on the spot. Cirano was surprised when one of them told him and his men about the hidden agenda of the Kedah ruler. Apparently, the Kedah ruler had been plotting to rebel against the Republic once all his preparations were made. The nobles were merely trying to prevent a catastrophe from happening with this rebellion but Nuova Italia intervened where they shouldn't have. Others present thought little of this accusation but Cirano definitely had his suspicions of the Kedah ruler, especially the king's response when he was rescued.

Chapter 503

In the capital, a new policy was introduced in response to the increasing number of people wanting to start a new life elsewhere. The peace and prosperity of the Republic meant the cities and towns were becoming slowly overcrowded. Plans were made to expand the cities and towns to accommodate the increasing population but such project took time to complete and the time needed wasn't fast enough for some people. As new lands were discovered ready for colonists, more people were enticed to starting a new life abroad where they would start anew with land they could call their own.

Meanwhile, Alviero and Cirano were both recognized for their quick response to the crisis in Kedah. The Doge realized what might have happened if the noble rebels succeeded so the brothers were rewarded handsomely for their contributions to the safety of the Republic. The Doge also promised to keep a closer eye on Ayutthaya because the heathen nation had been plotting too much against the Republic and always looked to undermine the stability of the Republic. He was even willing to listen to what Cirano had to say regarding his suspicions of the Kedah ruler.

Because of his quickness and decisiveness during the suppression of the Kedah noble rebels, Cirano suddenly found himself assigned to Borneo where the Brunei nation was experiencing her own rebellions. The Brunei ruler had requested aid from the Republic and the Doge wasn't exactly going to just say no. The fact that Cirano performed splendidly meant it wasn't a difficult process to pick the candidate to lead Nuova Italian men into Borneo. Unlike in Kedah, Cirano would be leading trained men who had seen combat in the past so he was the leader of some of the best in the Republic.

Cirano was truly honored and agreed to the Doge's order without hesitation. He spent half a day preparing for the furthest journey he would embark on in his entire life. He and his brother had a simple farewell since they both knew they were both contributing to the Republic. The brothers made a promise to each other until their reunion. Alviero would continue the growth of his province until it became one of the largest cities in all of Nuova Italia while Cirano would bring back a beautiful wife from Borneo so he could finally settle down with a family which was what their parents always wanted.

Chapter 504

While Cirano and his men were making their way to Borneo, the officials in Middag of Taiwan made a terrifying discovery and sent a messenger at once to the capital regarding their discovery. Taiwan was only recently colonized but the strategic location of the island was well known to many, including the numerous Chinese states which were envious that Nuova Italia managed to colonize all of the island for herself. Because Taiwan was so close to China and so far from other parts of the Republic, the officials on Taiwan could see just how vulnerable they were if they were attacked from the north.

There were no doubts that Yue would come to the aid of the Republic but how much they would contribute to the wars was questionable. After all, there was no doubt that the Yue ruler would put the agenda of his nation first and the well-being of Nuova Italia second. There was a huge likelihood that Yue would dedicate her forces on Mainland China while those on Taiwan would be facing the enemy on their own. The officials on Taiwan hoped more troops would be sent to Taiwan as a way of deterring the enemy but no one on the island was particularly confident help could be sent very quickly, let alone arrive.

The officials on Taiwan first noticed the few boats that were operating very close to Taiwan. They could understand if some Chinese fisherman made a wrong turn and somehow ended up at Taiwan. Yet, these boats were arriving at the shore of Taiwan far too often and their timing of reaching the island was more or less the same time each day. They later discovered that there were also men dropped off by the boats and their whereabouts were, for the time being unknown. They quickly sent men out to find these intruders to learn about their true purpose of trespassing into Nuova Italian territory.

One of the trespassers was arrested and interrogation revealed that the Chinese state of Wu had been fabricating a claim to attack Taiwan. They claimed that the men sent to the island gathered enough evidence of who truly owned the Taiwan island. The captured trespassers was even willing to accuse Nuova Italia of venturing where they didn't belong stating that Nuova Italians weren't welcomed anywhere near China. The officials let the man go but they informed the capital at once of their discovery. If a war was bound to happen in these parts, they needed their navy and army present.

Chapter 505

The ordinary civilians held whatever weapons they could get their hands on and were fighting the local soldiers who were losing ground. The Brunei soldiers were few in numbers and lacked both the training and desire to fight the peasants who rose up against them. Brunei hadn't been formed for too long and the main focus by the Brunei government had been internal to help its people recover soon from the devastation of Kutai oppressors and the wars which ensued. These peasants weren't too pleased with the rate of the recovery so they thought an uprising would speed things up.

The Brunei government tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the peasant rebels but the peasants simply refused to listen to all logic until all their demands, no matter how absurd, were met. The peasant rebels were making steady progress in the Brunei capital as the soldiers were falling back to avoid further bloodshed. These soldiers never had the desire to hurt their fellow countrymen when they had more dangerous enemies in another part of Brunei threatening Brunei. Yet, the peasant rebels, thinking they were winning, pushed their advantage and were soon threatening the Brunei palace where the Brunei ruler was hoping the peasants would stop their advances and went home.

Unknown to the peasants, the Nuova Italian army led by Cirano had already arrived and were stationed inside the palace. They arrived to assist the Brunei ruler who requested them to remain passive unless the situation was getting out of control which was exactly the case. The Brunei ruler made one final attempt when he appeared before the peasants with numerous bodyguards as he tried to diffuse the escalating situation before Cirano and his men had to act. He spoke with the peasants and listened to their demands before finding a reasonable middle ground for both sides.

The presence of the Brunei ruler speaking with the peasant helped calm down most of the peasants but some of the peasant rebels weren't having anything unless all their demands were made. As they approached the Brunei ruler with hostility, Cirano saw this as the situation getting way out of hand so he led his troops into action. Against the inexperienced peasant rebels, the Nuova Italian soldiers simply massacred the rebels until there were no survivors. The Brunei ruler was displeased to see this happening but he understood why this was the eventual outcome. He could only weep for the ignorance of the peasant rebels.
