AAR Writers of the Week : Storey and Meiji Tenno

In our quest for writing and having fun with a game, we set our focus this week on two completely different people.

Storey you have been with the forum for a long time and I remember your participation with the Italy AAR last year and also you have participated with many of the RPG AARs such as the Free Company and many others. As a forum veteran you have many consistent works you have done and helped make the forum what it is today. Alive with creativity, participation and fun:). I know your first name is Joe but I dont know much more than that, perhaps you could share more about yourself with us all. Thanks again Joe and we look forward to more writing from you.

Meiji Tenno has been on the forum for a couple months now and has produced a very well laid out AAR for his first time writing on the board. He is just one of many great newcomers to the forum that I want to lift up and get to know better in the weeks to come. Meiji it is a pleasure to have you here and to enjoy this game, and the writing you do. I hope you will tell us more about yourself and how things are in Japan. What brings you to this game and to like history so much?

Thanks to both of you and to all those who take the time to talk to these two writers, maybe get to know them, those who help to make our community of writers that much more enjoyable.

What a Game!

I'll just add to Warspite's comments that I hope you stick around to become even more of a veteran, Storey. Heck, you've been around here doing all kinds of good work for so long, no point in leaving now. :D

In all seriousness, glad to have you around, Storey.

Storey,

Well another of the glorious FC commanders has made his way into the limelight. Congratulations, and this is certainly well-deserved.;)

M-T,

Well, the daily double for you! Congrats. Your AAR happens to be one of my favorite reads right now, and here's to hoping you stick around and become a vet on the board.;)

It's well deserved. "Who Killed Cologne?" and "The Gods Did Play" were brilliant, and "The Rise of The Japanese Empire" is an engrossing read these days.

:)

Keep up the good work, both of you!

Joe,

Bravo sir.:) Your AAR, The Alliance, was the first one I ever read. After that, I was hooked.:)

The gods did play is one of my favorite AARs of all time.:)

I was very happy when you joined our PBEM MP game. I enjoyed the interaction and some of the verbal barbs. Your post about the golden statue depicting the King of France with the dog at his feet having the face of the Doge of Venice cracked me up...well..after I went "oh _hit!" and checked the game file nervously.;) :D

Your most recent tale, Who Killed Cologne?, was superb. Visions of old black and white who dunnit movies leaped from your text.

I guess what I'm trying to say with all of this rambling is that I have enjoyed your AARs tremendously and am looking forward to anything you write in the future. Thanks for sharing your talents with the readers here.:)

Meiji-Tenno,

Writer of the Week and your AAR lands in the Weekly Showcase. Congratulations on both awards.:) They are well deserved. I have enjoyed reading The Rise of the Japanese Empire. It has also been a pleasure getting to know you a little better through PMs and the HoI forum.:) I am looking forward to the first Japanese WWII AAR you write.:)

I do not know the tradition.. Sorry. :(

Well, it all started when Jimmu became Emperor of Japan, 2662 years ago. Emperor Jimmu did this and that and history continued. :D :D

OK.. I know the tradition now.. :)

Well, I really like history. Don't ask me why, I don't know either.. :D And I mainly like Japanese history. Don't ask me why. :D
I also really like strategy games.. Especially historical ones. I often played (and still do play) games such as Age of Empires II, Gary Grisby's Pacific War, Shogun: Total War (And Mongol Invasions and Civilization II,III (As you probably guessed, I play Nippon in all of them)
Now, how EUII took over my life.. One day, a few months ago (Early Spring  ) I was at the store, looking at computer games, and I was about to leave (Nothing interesting), and then that shiny black box caught my eye. Then, the Samurai's face was on the cover (Paradox, that Samurai earned you some money :D ). So, I picked it up and looked at the box, and then decided to buy it. So, I went home, installed it on my computer, and started it up. I saw Tutorial on the menu screen, but I wanted to get started (As it was already about 10:00 PM), so I clicked on Single Player and started my first game. (I was playing Nippon, by the way ;) ). In my first game, I didn't know how to transport troops (I feel like an idiot remembering that moment.. ) and I eventually figured out what to do.

I soon had to go to sleep and awoke early the next day to play it again. I spent a large part of that day playing. I soon began to get familar with how to play and even conquered Korea and colonized Taiwan. Then, after I played it for several months, I went onto the website, and Patch 1.05 was just released. Or maybe released shortly after.. Hmm.. Anyways, I installed it and played more. Then, I registered for these forums and decided to do an AAR for my Nippon game. At first, it began as more of a log of what I did. But, I got suggestions from many people (Thanks shawng1, Backpack, Storey, MrT and everyone else! :) ) and I used those ideas into the AAR. And, umm.. Here I am. :D

Now I have continued the tradition. Have a nice day! :)

First on all I'm happy to share the spot light with Meiji-Tenno.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and as for who I am well maybe I can give you some idea of where I’m coming from.

I think I might be the oldest member of this forum but I could be wrong. As to how old I am I can’t really say since it involves higher math to figure out. But here are some hints.

I remember sitting on the sofa in my parent’s living room watching my dad uncrate this strange contraption. He was sweating and groaning but he eventually got it out. As soon as he had it out of the box he started fiddling with some metal rods. I, being a naturally curious seven-year-old boy asked.

"Dad what are those?"

"They’re rabbit ears. Now leave me alone can’t you see I’m concentrating."

Well I might not have been the brightest kid around but I knew no rabbit had grown ears like that so I just sat back and ate my Cracker Jacks, forcing myself not to look for the prize that was somewhere in the box, while my dad sweated over this new mystery. After a few more minutes my dad turned the rotator knob on the front and wonder of wonders a black and white picture appeared. It was grainy and out of focus and the picture slid off to the side but with a few adjustments and a lot of moving of the rabbit ears a cartoon appeared on the screen. The age of Television was welcomed with open arms into the Storey home. It was one of the first sets on our block.

Several years later in the early 60’s while I was running headfirst into puberty I had the joy of picking up a newspaper and reading about the new fashion craze called the miniskirt. Ah, it was a good time to be a teenager!

Several years after that I found myself dropping out of college because I couldn’t stand the concrete and asphalt warehouse that they called a college that I went to in Los Angeles. The problem was that it was 1968 and the Vietnam War was in full gear. If you could walk and talk at the same time you were military material. I ended up joining the army and with some good choices and a lot of luck ended up not having to go to Nam as a foot soldier. I ended up as a Russian voice intercept operator stationed on the Black Sea in Turkey. If you’ve ever read Catch-22 you have a good idea of what my military career was like. In Turkey it was the first time that I was able to walk among ruins that were hundreds if not a few thousand years old. One of the great boat trips I took was along the Black Sea coast down to Istanbul. Going through the narrow sea passage right outside of the city I stood on the ship’s deck and watched forts, castles and various other ruins slip by on both sides. I had been studying to be a history major in my brief collage career and if things had been different I could see myself spending my time poking around ruins like this for the rest of my life. But life can be funny with its twists and turns.

After my brief career in the military I spent the next year acting like a hippie living out of a Volkswagen bus while traveling around the states. I ended up in Seattle where I married and settled down. I’ve spent the last 25 years working in electronics = computers = Internet.

So what brings an old fart like me here? One word, CREATIVEITY. What make’s this forum unique is the people who contribute their ideas, stories, about a great game. Since I work in a profession that can be, shall I say a little dry, this forum allows me to stretch myself in ways that would not be possible in my profession. As long as the ideas that bounce around this forum interest me I’ll be here. So you’re stuck with me. ;)

It's quite appropriate that Meiji-Tenno should be dual honoured this week as both a writer and with the Weekly Showcase. His 'The Rise of the Japanese Empire' is a great piece of historical narrative. I echo the rest of the members in a fervent wish that you stick around and grace us with more inspired work.

And Joe... Joe, Joe, Joe, Joe, Joe...

Storey was one of the first to contribute to my fledgling Free Company thread back on EU I.

As has become normal with the man, his impact was immediately felt. That first post gained his character a certain notoriety. It centered around water and went on to include sardines, becoming a running gag for a long, long time. :D

When he finally took to writing his own material, it was obvious the originality that graced the Free Company threads was no fluke.

Joe's AARs remain among the most innovative of any on the forum, and he never ceases to amaze me with his creativity. Beyond that he is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent people, I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Touch 'em all, Joe... ;)

Congratulations to both for such well deserved honours.

When I first got here, I was just a young pup, didn't know what I was doing, and I was getting discouraged in my writing (it seems like so long ago), and Joe gave me one of my first real responses that was beyond a one line attaboy... I can honestly say that if it hadn't been for Joe, there may not have been an end to the Birth of the Scottish Empire, or for that matter, my current Cyprus AAR...

Joe has inspired so many, not only with his kind words to fellow writers, but some of his innovative approaches to playing/reporting the game, which broke boundaries and made some of the newer experiments a lot easier for newer writers to try. You have certainly earned this award.

And M-T, as a first-time writer, you have busted your ass producing a fine piece of work, and you richly deserve the laurels which you have received. In a word... Congratulations....

Wow! Someone on the board who actually knew Napoleon! I knew you were old Joe, but WOW! :p

More kind things to say about Joe:

I enjoy his writing immensely and his creativity inspires me to try to do a better job with my AARs.

But more kudos to Joe for also being a good READER and providing that generous feedback that seems to be the manna so many folks around here all yearn for. I know I appreciate his feedback and I know a lot of other people do as well.

Congrats!
