(Background: I mainly play MP and I always play with tweaking mods, like PFU, which includes no level 10 forts. The ai is so easy to beat that the only challenge is using purposefully suboptimal strats. Ergo, the scope of this topic is big picture, not exact numbers)
Now then, when playing industry constrained nations like the USSR, which I'll use as my example, I'm always torn between having a healthy equipment stockpile and simply packing everything I have into a massive army that has more firepower than it's foe. My thinking is that I could have about half my army as full strength 40 width 14-4 divisions and the rest as pure infantry. The pure infantry would be deployed in a large defense in depth near the Soviet-Polish border while the main infantry would be behind the river. My armored forces could bloody their armored forces and our air forces could clash before the Germans reach the river line. This way, the Germans can't simply walk up to the line, find a weakpoint, and CAS it.
However, I'm leary about not having a reserve stockpile. Tanks are in a similar vein. I could have twice as many tank divisions to cutoff German spearheads...but then I have to start disbanding divisions after a month.
What do y'all think?
