I've been getting this error when loading up cities (individual cities, not the whole game) since I got the game. I followed the known issues thread and decided against uninstalling Avast. I just decided to put up with having to try to load cities a few times, as it does usually load on the second or third attempt.

I noticed recently that the error should be fixed as of patch 1.06b, but the error still happens when I try to load up a city.

I do run a lot of mods and assets but I saw the bug without them.

I've tried posting the C:S folder as an exception in Avast with no luck. I also saw people pointing towards DEP as a possible problem, so I tried to turn DEP off for C:S but was told it can't be done for a 64-bit executable.

Is there anything I can do sort of uninstalling Avast. To be fair, I refuse to remove my AV software. I have put up with the error for a long time, but was just miffed when I saw it's supposed to be fixed.

I am unaware of this problem but I don't see how uninstalling Avast will help. I have run the game successfully with Avast installed and active on both computers, one had windows 8.1 and now 10, the other Windows 7, all running without problems with Avast active.

Yeah I've heard the same thing elsewhere.

Number 2 on this list of known issues is where I first read that Avast can cause the error - https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...wts-compendium-thread-for-known-fixes.844461/

Maybe it's not Avast, but it is a GetThreadContext error. A little Google research showed me that Unity does have history of conflicts with AV software.

It's not a huge problem. As I've said 1 or 2 attempts at loading a city is usually all it takes. It's just inconvenient and I finally decided it was time to ask.

To be fair, you need to uninstall Avast for at least a quick test to see if it's the issue for sure. You have no proof at all Avast is indeed the cause of your problem.

The problem with Avast and the other AV apps occurred at game start time. If you are getting past there, it's a different (and I think new) problem. Have you tried loading with no mods?

I'm inclined to agree with AndrewT but as your problem never went away, and as MJ said, you can always try a quick Avast uninstall. Download the installer before you uninstall it so you're ready to go afterwards. Then you can uninstall and disable your internet adapter if you wish, you don't have to be online for either Steam or Cities. Fire it up and see, then you'll know for sure. Enable your adapter, install Avast and you're back.

Well the problem has occured since the day of release, and at that time I had no mods or assets attached to the game. I can give it a go, but I am wondering if any of my saved cities will load without the mods I have associated with them.

I've not noted any bugs in game either. I've had the odd nullexception where I have removed an asset and the game can't find it, and there was a bug with a mod I later removed. The only other problem I have is that the game will crash if I try to go back to the menu screen from either a saved game or the tools. I don't know if that's connected to the GetThreadContext errors though.

There was a suggestion I found online earlier that suggested a plugged in controller might cause a conflict. I guess it's a long shot but I always have an XBox 360 controller plugged in.

----

I just turned off all mods and all assets and tried to load an old save that I thought wouldn't be affected by the lack of mods. I still got the GC error.

Unplugging the controller made no difference, as I suspected.

The city did load fine when I turned off Avast. There's no way i'll leave Avast turned off even if it does turn out to be the cause of the problem though. I've had this error since release and played well over 200 hours of C:S so it won't stop me playing the game. It would just be nice to know why it always crashes.

----

Is there any other files I can provide? Windows does show an error report in event viewer for every game crash as a result of the GC error, but I suspect that's just a report that the game crashed, not the specifics.

I will try that when I have a bit more time. Probably not till Friday now. I have turned Avast off and loaded a city fine, but I suspect just turning the program off is not a fair indication.

I have since noticed there's a gaming mode with Avast, so I'm going to keep that on and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the replies btw.

They'll load but have gaps in them. I was more thinking of you starting a new city, as a test.

Ok, I started a new city with all mods and assets disabled. It loaded very quickly with no GC error.

I then loaded older saves with no GC errors.

Adding the mods and assets back in then gave me GC errors both starting and loading a city.

That obviously suggests that mods or assets are causing my problems, but I certainly remember getting GC errors before I ever ran the game with a mod. In my earliest cities I refrained from using mods because I wanted some achievements.

I do appear to have 809 mods or assets subscribed to, which would explain why cities load slowly

I can't help but feel there might be something more to it, but am willing to accept it could be mods or assets and I'll just have to put up with the GC errors. It's not like I can't play the game. It just takes a few attempts to load a saved city. It's frustrating more than game breaking.

Besides, if it is mods and assets causing the GC crash then I see no way to avoid it. I don't want to run the game without the mods and assets I have. It just adds so much more for me.

No-one's suggesting you run with none at all. But one or more of them clearly have a problem, and we don't really have a way of determining which one(s) it is, other than binary division - un-subscribe to half, and so on.

I had the same problem for a long time. The suggestion by Creat in this thread (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...r-in-gc-getthreadcontext-failed.842483/page-2) fixed my problem.
