Alright folks, the thread discussing AI buffs also talked about waging war (naturally). I wanted to create a thread where people can come in and discuss various strategies to build and maintain a navy. This stems from the fact that I realized that after 150 hours into Stellaris, there's still a lot I don't understand about waging war. So I wanted to rectify that. I'm a bit bored with normal difficulty, and would like to go to insane difficulty. I was playing around on hard the other day, and it was fun, but I was pretty outmatched.

So, how does one set oneself up for success early on? In the AI thread I think someone had 60 corvettes by like 2029. Never done that, myself. How does one do accomplish that? Ignore research? Do you build mineral stations still? Just focus on planets? Do you colonize as fast as possible in an attempt to bring more resources in?

What are the best weapons early on? I've read that decking your ships out with plasma and a single mass driver is the way to go. Last game I did well on I did the opposite (mass drivers with a single plasma), but is that inferior? I know missiles are pretty terrible, so I don't use them. In regards to FTL, is there any reason to ever use anything besides wormholes? Any time I've chosen warp or hyperlanes, I spend the game going "I should have went with wormholes."

Anything anyone wants to contribute regarding warfare in this game is most welcome to, be that specific builds, strategies during wars, or proper ways to develop planets for the purposes of building a good war machine. I just don't know much about the system, and I feel like a lot of folks could benefit from having a thread to check out that deals primarily with combat. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I'd be quite interested in such a discussion too. Don't have much to contribute though, so I'll be honest this is more a bump to try to save the thread from being lost in the wave of post-Utopia(n) excitement.
