"I am known as Lord 1732 to your people. I accept this challenge. We fight to the Death."

One of the hangers opens and the artifact, drifts a little outside before it is slowed by Ur-Quan fighters, the fighters retreat back inside the hanger and the hanger doors close. Soon after a small ship roughly 50 feet wide and 150 feet long emerges from another hanger bay. It has two turreted Laser Cannons, oversized versions of the fix mounted ones of Ur-Quan fighters.

"I am prepared, Face me, Opponent."

The transmission comes from the ship. An Ur-Quan's personal transport ship.
" XO, prepare an F-56 fighter bomber, armed with uni-directional fusion warheads, a complement of armor piercing tungstan rounds and armor piercing rounds with explosive muntions for the qaud rail guns."

" sir, you aren't really going to do this, I me..."

Captain Earhardlt cut him off and said " Under-captain, I worked my way up from the fighter cores during the immerian pirate wars. I have taken much better equip vessels than this."

Why do rich people care about making money?

Certainly, the poor make money for survival. So much to care for, so little resources to provide. For the peasants, money is almost all that matters.

But the rich. The rich make money because they want to. Because of the need to break the non-existent glass ceiling. There is always one more tier, whether it is millionaire, billionaire or trillionaire. Their drive for more, more, more make them soar to ever greater heights, to attempt to quench the thirst for coin. The rich exploit. The rich treat commoners as nothing more than specks of dirt used as cogs in the machine. To the rich, whether banker, conqueror, or entrepreneur, the poor are nothing more than animals, barely sapient.

To Marshall, Carter, and Dark, the rich are inconsequential.

People, regardless of social standing, are all the same. The poor may spend their savings on worthless yet treasured trinkets, sold by the middle class. The salaryman may splurge on a pretty ring for his wife, the profits of which go into the pockets of a wealthy mining boss. In the same way, the gullible rich will burn millions of dollars on a single impossible object. Everyone is willing to waste their precious, precious money on something out of the ordinary.

But value is artificial. The poor spend their pennies on mass-produced china, convinced that it has some worth to it. The rich convince the middle class that diamonds are rare and valuable, despite the stones being retrieved in Africa by the billion. Marshall, Carter and Dark convince the rich that the impossible is invaluable, while any anartist on a street can twist a die into a hypercube.

While this may cause some to think of Marshall, Carter and Dark as a massive, faceless corporation, their workforce numbers at most in the order of one hundred personnel. Their operations are directed and streamlined, maximising efficiency and minimising cost. Further manpower, if necessary, is outsourced from other organisations. Those in the highest positions of power are perhaps the most mysterious. Wild stories abound on the subject: depending on the source, they may be ghosts or demons, old men sending messages from beyond the grave, faceless monsters from another dimension, or even shapeshifting lizardmen.

Species Name: Auvohm
Species Adjective: Auvo
Empire Name: Iuoccarian Meritocracy
Empire Adjective: Iuoccarian
Phenotype: Mammalian
Traits: Talented, Natural Physicists, Slow Breeders
Ethos: Materialist, Fanatic Individualist
Government: Indirect Democracy
Homeworld: Iliuvia
Planet type: Arctic
Former Isolationists/Xenophobes

Short Description of Species: An ancient (by most species standards) mammalian species that resembles a bipedal lion, the Auvohm have striking white fur, often flecked in black and grey. They're not terribly imposing, standing about five feet tall, though their overall build would be considered muscular. It is customary for males to braid their manes in intricate styles, and the loss of one's mane is considered to be of the highest shame. Their homeworld of Iliuvia is an anomaly by cosmic standards, with a thick atmosphere, yet surprisingly weak gravity. So much so, that Iliuvia is characterized by large levitating land masses of ice and snow. This environment has given the Auvohm a unique evolution and understanding of physics. The Auvohm are a fierce and proud people. While they realistically assume they are not alone in this galaxy, they refuse to believe any to be above them, and will fight ferociously to protect the independence of their society and their quest for individual greatness.

Short Description of Empire and History: Located on the very edge of one of the remote arms of the galaxy, the Auvohm have been largely missed by the intergalactic community, at first, purely by chance, but later by design. The Iuoccarian Meritocracy is lead by the best and brightest of the Auvohm, running the gambit between scientists, industrialists and the finest military minds society can produce. In fact, the goal of the Iuoccarian society is indeed, to bring each Auvohm to his or her maximum potential. Those that succeeded in the past lead the Auvohm to great technological discoveries, or through violent and bloody civil wars. The great leaders of the past, in all fields are revered here. But above all is Xvin, the Builder. Xvin and his team of scientists uncovered the secrets of faster than light travel, and unlocked the mysteries of the physical laws of the universe. With the backing of all Auvohm behind him, he lead the construction of a massive station in the middle of the orbit of their home star. This construction became known as the Jewel of Illiuvia, and serves several purposes. One, it acts as a powerful wormhole generator. Two, a signal jammer that keeps the rest of the intergalactic community from believing there to be life this far out into space, as no signal can enter or leave the outer bounds of the home star. Three, the Academy, an advanced vocational institution for the advancement of all society, the brightest upcoming minds gather here. Lastly, it serves as the bulwark to the defense of their home star with its advanced shielding and laser technology. Xvin served several terms as President within the Iuoccarian Meritocracy, but his age has long since past. A new Era is dawning for the Auvohm, one where they seek to end their seclusion and take their rightful place among the stars.

A new great leader has risen, Yochol. A young Auvohm, but well respected for both her military prowess and leading research in the field of prototype AI. In the largest referendum ever held within the Iuocarrian Meritocracy, largely at Yochol's urging, the decision to bring down the jamming barrier has been made. An unprecedented military build-up, and investment into new colonization technologies and organizations has shaped this new era. The first true explorers have just launched, ending the isolation of the Auvohm.

Technological levels: Highly advanced understanding of Sensors, Deflector Shields, Lasers, and Energy Sources, rudimentary AI used for Military and Industrial purposes. Severely lacking in colonization technologies. Notable amount of planetary defenses, from what appears to be a distrust of those that come from beyond.

Fleet Size: Considerable, but limited in flight range due to Wormhole travel and lack of colonization.

[Hopefully makes things interesting, I tried to make the race fairly adaptable but not a total push-over either.]

[ Guys, we should put that jammer back up, probably. These galaxy folks seem pretty lame, what with their submission and slavery stuff. ]

Ur-Quan dialect is not instantly deciphered in its entirety, but the repetition of the submission messages allow for those messages of that flavor to be largely understood. The linguists who succeed at this the first time are given pause, shaking their heads in disappointment with at least one race in the galaxy before passing word to the Admiralty Department. Plans for long-range detection sensors are quickly funded.

Plans for long-range detection sensors are quickly funded.
Now I wonder how they would be feeling to join in the Defensive pact formed by the United System Alliance.

[ Guys, we should put that jammer back up, probably. These galaxy folks seem pretty lame, what with their submission and slavery stuff. ]

[Hah]

[ I say our two empires will make good friends]

[How come? You'll both be trying for monopoly of the galaxies trade! :p]

[Given they're former isolationists, it may be sometime before they warm up to the other races.]
here is press release from the alliance President.

I, Samian Toldart, as President of the alliance and as representative of her people, will stand with Kendros Empire against the Ur-quan and their vassal states. Also, let be know, in this Galaxy where it seems the choice for new governments are enslavement or extermination, that the Systems Alliance offer our friendship and protection. Not as conquerors, but as equals. We do not ask for you to submit and dismantle your government, merely open your borders and join with us in a new alliance called the Independent League. For peace and prosperity for all.

[Broadcast for all Empires, in quotations.]

There are many days of deliberations after the most recent messages are received. President Yochol releases these words to the galaxy: "Hear us, Outsiders and listen well. I am Yochol, I speak for the Iuoccarian Meritocracy. Let it be known that despite our relative silence these past eons, that time has come to an end. We, the Auvohm will take our rightful place in this sector of the galaxy. Challenges to this right will be met with force, and our borders are to remain closed until your good intentions are proven. We will not be 'enlightened', nor enslaved, or require any sort of 'protection'. A healthy respect for our way of life, and our vision will result in mutual understanding and respect."

Meanwhile, a law is passed to allow for the active study of captured alien species. The Auvohm would learn more, one way or another.

To the Iuoccarian Meritocracy, using a extremely powerful transmitter attempting to override any weaker transmissions in the area.

"We are saddened that your people have delayed their choice. It saddens us further that you do not realize the dangers in this Dark galaxy, and your need for protection. One way or another your people will learn, whether by the Benign Ur-Quan Kzer-Za or by confronting those horrors among the stars, alone with only the Villainous Khendros and their Axis of Evil or the Ruthless Corruptness of the Alliance and their corporate empire. watching you being devoured. As we cannot allow such species to put themselves at such danger through their Ignorance, we will inform you at a later date. We must request for you to reconsider, but we doubt you will change your course. We will have to watch as you fall to the evils of this galaxy, as we have countless before you. We the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za bring Peace, Prosperity, and Security. Accept our boon of Slavery or face the consequences of your action as you stand alone among the stars."

The Iuoccarian's receive this message, but make no overt reply, instead content to begin mapping out their idea of the political scene in the galaxy. Clearly, the Ur-Quan were underestimating them, they thought. But more so, they were curious to meet some of these creatures from the stars, if only their wormhole technology was not so limited.
