As a long time fan and consumer of Paradox Games I recently purchased Stellaris and I thought i would share my first impression of the game, I hesitated to buy it at first as it didn't really fit the traditional Paradox titles that are set in different historical time periods.
Here's a bit of my history with Paradox games to give you some background, i picked up my first copy of Victoria in 2004 when it was first being distributed by a company called Strategy First here in Canada, at first like most players i was overwhelmed but i quickly became immersed in the gigantic world, at that time i was playing other games such as Warcraft III, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires 2 etc... I tried to convert some of my friends to Victoria but with no luck so i enjoyed it on my own.
My second Paradox game was Europa Universalis II, then i graduated to EU III, HOI 2 then 3 and CK II, today I am more of a casual gamer as I have much more different priorities and commitments in life but I've purchased EU IV, HOI 4 and any DLC that come out, CK II is also great with the constant improvements but a bit difficult to manage over time (I have a hard time tracking down family members and former court members that leave my court)
Of the recent games the one that I've played the most is EU IV which I love because of the constant improvements to the game even though i have to purchase DLCs for all of the new content I am more than happy to fork out 15$ every 6 months for some new content, HOI IV is also an awesome game however i am disappointed with the AI so far i try to play the underdogs like Poland or France, other minors are fun but with no unique units or focus tree are not as interesting, but after a while I've developed some strategy to hold off Germany and then the AI just keeps attacking me non-stop and i just hold my ground and they get bled dry for example France has 300k casualties after a few months and Germany has 3 million, i can't wait for the next DLCs to solve some of these issues because as a casual gamer i can't commit the time necessary to play multiplayer games and must satisfy myself with the single player experience.
Enough of all that, let's talk about Stellaris, I bought Stellaris last week end, when i first started it my first impression was good the graphics are good, the factions seem interesting and then the game started, I thought to myself holy shit this looks complicated, then i decided to just let the game start and unpaused it, after about 5 minutes I had started exploring my home system and i was hooked, there was a thread recently about reasons to buy the game and one poster said that you will feel more empowerment over your empire and a bigger sense of pride because you get to build it from the ground up, all I have to say is that so far great first impressions and I can't wait for the next DLC, this is definitely right up the same alley as other Paradox Games with a whole new twist.
Sincerely, a long time Paradox fan from Canada
