Well not knowing completely what kind of house you are building aka trying something new doesn´t really play well with just adding more people and the end result could have been just having a big mess. So I think that just adding 10 more devs wouldn´t have speeded thing up at all.

Warhammer TW won't impact any of my game decisions. Ever since my bad experience with Medieval 2, I have waited until the complete bundle is deep discounted and that there are good mods available to play any TW game.

Wouldn't those resources used on Stellaris not be able to advance/ speed up the development of the many iterations of HOI IV development?

As basic as it sounds, you are going to build a house faster with 20 people then only 10 people..........
Not necessarily. My job is managing dev teams. Coordination gets more difficult with more people working on a project. This results in diminishing returns from adding people, especially when they are working on related areas of code.

To use the house analogy, think about having a carpenter building walls at the same time the plumber is installing pipes, the electrician is installing wiring, and the floor layer is installing floors in the same room. They will get in each other's way so much that individual productivity will go down.

Past a certain point, adding an extra person will be either zero or negative for the project as a whole.

There are ways to alleviate this, such as properly structuring your code in independent libraries and classes. Also, automated testing let's you scale up further because you catch newly introduced problems from code interaction.

Lastly, developers are not interchangeable. Adding someone with no exposure to a code base to a new project will cost time from the rest of the team to get that person up to speed. It will also increase the defect rate in the short term until that person is familiar enough with the code.

Quite. Also, the speculation on dates strikes me as ridiculous. It seems far more likely that the release date was determined by it being on course to be ready at about that time and someone thinking that releasing a WWII game on the anniversary of D-Day was a cool idea than by a desire to wait a fixed time after another release.

Software development simply doesn't work like that. In fact, construction doesn't even really work like that. Beyond a certain limit, there's only so many people who can work on something before adding personnel doesn't make things any faster, in fact causes things to slow down. Some task can only be done by one person (what IBM refer to as a single ownership pattern task) - AI coding often falls within this since it needs to be done according to a single methodology, some artwork can as well since it needs to be done in the same style. On top of that some task require finishing before others, so the tasks can't simply be performed in parallel.

In the specific case of HOI4 and Stellaris, development of Stellaris started a long time after that of HOI4 so Brook's Law also applies - adding the people working on Stellaris to HOI4's dev team would likely have made HOI4 later, not earlier.

You can't solve any problem by just throwing more men or money at it. I believe the devs themselves have stated that simply throwing more manpower at HOI4 wouldn't have helped.
Otherwise you end up with bizarre situations when you have a lot of people and they just get in each others' way, or sit around with nothing to do.

The more I think about this 'complaint' the more ludicrous it seems. Paradox is releasing Stellaris and HOI4 within a month of each other. We should be grateful they are doing this, since it surely represents their determination to get *both* these games released as quickly as possible.

I can easily see another company deciding to stagger the launch of two major titles so that one wouldn't 'steal the thunder' of the other, marketing-wise. So, release Stellaris Q2, let the marketing and gaming media excitement run its course, then release a second surefire hit, HOI4, in Q4, close to the holidays.

We should be grateful that Paradox *isn't* following a line of reasoning like that.

@Jamey and @FOARP - you do have valid points, but as a manager of software development teams and MANY other facets of Information Technology, the more people I have to work on a project the faster the project finishes. As a manager, it is my responsibility to put the right people on the right task. HOI IV development is not all coding. Design, art, QA, etc. are just a few of the responsibilities to create good software, or in this case a game. If I have a subpar QA tester, or even less QA testers available, that segment of development will lag. If I do not have a enough coders to resolve issues brought up in QA, then that part of development will lag. I’m sure you see pattern.

I do concede if you have too many people on one segment of the project, you run into a bottle neck. A good manager knows how to avoid that situation and put the right people in place to succeed.

In conclusion, numbers do matter in regards to project scale and timeline.

It means hoi4 is arbitrarily delayed so sales don't coincide.



No, hoi4 would be out a month or a little less before June 6th if there was no stellaris. Not huge but Stellaris most certainly affected Hoi4's release date.
Stellaris was announced later, so by simple logic, it should've been released later than HoI4, but HoI was delayed so many times that PDX found space:D before the HoI's release for Stellaris, so HoI4 wasn't delayed by Stellaris.

The only problem I have with this is that I think Stellaris will be "the one" so by the time a month has passed I won't be in a position to give hoi4 the attention it richly deserves.

Considering that Stellaris outran HOI4 in development (as Johan himself confirmed) I'm surprised that HOI4 is being released as early as June.
If anything I hope they're not taking chances and releasing it as polished as possible.
Then again, if all the fuss about the delayed dates for marketing reasons were true (and they could because it would be a legitimate business decision) they would have chosen a later date. After Stellaris' announcement, I thought HOI4 would be released in September.

It just makes sense. Stellaris is coming out first, so they want to release Hoi4 a little later so sales don't coincide. Maybe June 6th would happen without Stellaris, or maybe it's only there because of Stellaris. It's very possible that Hoi4 will be ready before the actual release date.
Thanks for showing that you're talking out of your behind. No, it doesn't just make sense.

The only problem I have with this is that I think Stellaris will be "the one" so by the time a month has passed I won't be in a position to give hoi4 the attention it richly deserves.

This guy gets it. Come 6/6, we will have two new, hopefully excellent Paradox games to idle away the summer with. What's not to like?

Stellaris was announced later, so by simple logic, it should've been released later than HoI4, but HoI was delayed so many times that PDX found space:D before the HoI's release for Stellaris, so HoI4 wasn't delayed by Stellaris.
