as the title suggests on launch stellaris was top selling game on steam and when i look today Hearts of iron 4 is 7th 1 place behind stellaris in 6th

Hearts of Iron has always been a niche franchise. Take the subreddits for example, Stellaris has over 30,000 people, meanwhile HOI4 has only 3,000.

the ranking doesnt mean much, since there might aswell be just a few purchases in between them for that day. Stellaris might have sold 100 copies that day while HoI IV has sold 99 for example. Infact, the last few days HoI IV was on 2nd place before Stellaris after Doom. Valve doesnt make any sale numbers public, so it is up to the developers to decide if they want to or not.
You also make a unfair comparision, since HoI IV isnt even out yet and still in pre-order and you totaly forget that alot of people actually order from the ParadoxPlaza to support Paradox (not Valve), which isnt included in Steams Top Sellers for obvious Reasons. Infact, HoI IV crashed the Paradox Store minutes after pre-orders went live. Alot of people dont pre-order anything anymore aswell.
Hearts of Iron is/was paradoxes biggest franchise.

Both being grand strategy games on PC, Stellaris can definitely cannibalize into HOI's sales.
Not to mention DOOM, the warhammer arriving in just 1 week, and the witcher 3 sales, all competitors that Stellaris didn't have to face.

HOI4 still hasn't launched. Why would you expect it to be in the lead over a game that has launched and is getting good word-of-mouth? The real comparator would be the Stellaris pre-order.

But you can't compare Stellaris at launch to HOI4 a few weeks before launch. You should be comparing with how Stellaris was doing a few weeks before it launched. It wasn't the top selling game on Steam at that point.

You have to be living in a cave if you think sales figures aren't public, steamspy has been around for over a year, and it's extremely accurate for any sales figure >100k. Stellaris is currently about 300k, and I don't think that's hard to beat with HOI4, given the renewed appetite for WW games right now. Just look at Battlefield 1, completely blindsiding COD which can only think about further into the future.

SteamSpy HAS NO 100% ACCURATE SALES NUMBERS. They are ESTIMATING the numbers since Steam Spy automatically gathers data from Steam user profiles, analyzes it and presents it.
SteamSpy cant tell the difference when there was a free weekend for example and thats why EUIV for example has complely unrelieable numbers. Because of the free weekends steamspy actually estimates that EUIV has over 920.000 owners.

Free weekends are still a minority and clearly indicated on steamspy with red warnings. For most games its 100% accurate in a practical sense, Paradox pretty much announced the 1 million sales mark for Pillars and Cities right when they also passed the mark on steamspy.

Stellaris appeals to the majority so yea i expect it to outsell HOI4, now is it a better game? So far from my gameplay experience i can say i don't enjoy stellaris and ill edit in my opinion of HOI4 when it releases but my intuition is it will be a fuck load better.

Depends on how much of those sells are preorders from Pdox or some other resellers who dont send out keys until the game is about to be released so those numbers aren't accurate.
Sales ATM (and only according to steamspy) are rather low for HOI IV (please cconsider that they usually take 2 days to update

Stellaris will outsell HoIIV for sure, at least in the beginning. If HoIIV is stellar^^, maybe with good ratings and coverage from gameing magazines it will create enough sells to race past Stellaris. If it is just good and has a lot of potential, like Stellaris, it will remain fare behind.

Well its simple, Hoi 4 launch is in 4 weeks time so we will find out then. However, the fact that all the current preorders already putting Hoi 4 only a single place behind Stellaris might give an indication of which might be the stronger brand
. Don't worry about sales figures, I'm sure like Stellaris, we will get a nice sticky post saying how HoI 4 is now the bestselling paradox game at release etc and they just built Scrooge's money vault under their HQ - 3
Firstly: And? So what?
Secondly: HoI isn't out yet, so comparing it is dumb.
Thirdly: If you can get Paradox to release sales numbers then I'll listen, until then it's all estimates.
