First of all, thank you for publishing the game on GOG!

However, it saddens me to see that it currently doesn't support achivements or cloud saves (and maybe even controller support). For me achievements are a very important part of Paradox games, so I miss them the most.

I would appreciate if someone from Paradox commented if they have plans for adding the support for those features.

Or just play it on Steam, since Steam is better(in this case) anyway.

Thanks for sharing your opinion about Steam, which is very relevant to this topic.
You're welcome and it is. The main benefit of GOG is no DRM. Stellaris doesn't have DRM at all anyway, so it doesn't matter.

Not having to include those features is probably the only reason it's on GOG. If they had to make significant changes to the game to support another platform I'm sure it wouldn't have happened.

It is always nice to see more variety of game platforms. Steam's stranglehold on the gaming industry isn't really a good thing.

I'm guessing the main problem is that all the achievements are not possible on Linux, since Galaxy doesnt exist on Linux. Which means the API structure doesnt exist on Linux. Which is probably why all that stuff isnt there

I mean you can go to GOG and tell them to get off their collective behinds and make a Linux version of Galaxy so devs can actually implement achievements cross platform. But GOG appears to not consider this a 'priority' right now. Translation: every living breathing person is working on Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent

edit: ok for all the 'disagree' pepole. Would you prefer if Paradox said:

"Hi we've implemented GOG Galaxy into Stellaris. Oh except if you're on Linux because GOG Galaxy doesn't support Linux. You guys are out of luck. Sorry!"

Would you be ok with this? Are you ok with the Linux crowd going bonkers because the GOG version is 'gimped' compared to the Mac/Windows version?

Hi all,

Right now we have a pretty light implementation of Stellaris on GOG, not using the Galaxy SDK (which is necessary for cloud saves and achievements on that platform). If the game is successful there, we'll definitely look in to adding it in the future. No promises yet.

"Inferior" is just your subjective opinion. Supporting a competing product instead of a monopoly, which always ends up being bad for the consumer, is an objectively valid reason (that you are free to dislike).

Using an inferior product for the sole purpose of of using it is not a good reason.

While I agree in general, he never said it was the only reason he prefers GOG.

Also, in general, the way to naturally break monopolies is by making a better product or providing a better prices. There are some situations (telecom, railroads, power, oil) where the monopoly holders can effectively prevent any competition from even being attempted (where government intervention is desirable, though some of the barriers are caused by government intervention too, hooray logic).

And monopoly holders have advantages even when there are no huge barriers to entering the market, so saying "the current best is stagnant, I see more potential in the currently inferior alternative" is also a valid reason to support them.

Well, is it a monopoly if it has competition?
i severly doubt it.
But anyway, i seriously wish this had happend sooner so i would have bought it /there/ instead on steam.
GOG honestly sounds like a better alternative to steam these days and i realy realy want to suport PDX trough GOG rather than steam, but i don't, because nearly all of my games are on steam already and i have a strong averson to having games spread over multiple accounts (hello Udon'tPlay and Origin, you're very much undesired) and i can't migrate them from one place to another :(

Well, is it a monopoly if it has competition?
The point I was making is that Steam only has competition / isn't a full on monopoly yet because people are willing to support competitors like GOG.

However, while it doesn't have a literal complete monopoly, Steam has what is called monopoly power. By some estimate Steam constitutes up to 80% of global game distribution. For reference, under US law "A market share in excess of 70 percent generally establishes a prima facie case of monopoly power". https://www.justice.gov/atr/competi...conduct-under-section-2-sherman-act-chapter-2

It's like how Windows technically has competitors, but still gets regarded as a monopoly. The reason being that in practice, the last few percentages doesn't really make a difference to the power a monopolistic entity wields - especially in the case of systems. This thread is a case in point; Stellaris was developed to utilise Steam's cloud sync, achievements, Steamworks, and multiplayer. These pose a form of soft-lock in, in that it takes significant additional effort to duplicate these functions on another system. With Steam's market share, it'll always be the first choice.

So, it's nice to see that Paradox has decided it's worthwhile to bring Stellaris to a non-Steam platform too. Seems like this might be considered off-topic though so I'll stop derailing OP's thread.

Using an inferior product for the sole purpose of of using it is not a good reason.
Automobiles started out distinctly inferior to horses. By that logic we should never have tried anything but horses to begin with.
The same applies to SSD's, x64 computing, Multicore CPU's and just about anything else we use today.
Indeed, why did we even use Steam if we had perfectly valid "have physical medium" DRM?

Using an inferior product for the sole purpose of of using it is not a good reason.
I actually prefer GOG because it is not a product at all. Unlike Valve's Steam, GOG's Galaxy client is completely optional and you can download and play games without it. I like games without DRM that I can launch directly from the .exe without having to go through the bother of launching a separate program to run the program that I want to run (so yay for Paradox games!). That is why I like GOG. And I would hardly consider Galaxy much inferior to Steam as well (not that Galaxy is anywhere near good), but that is mostly because Steam is an outdated piece of bloatware that runs way too slow, uses up a lot more system resources than needed and has a horrible interface. Valve really needs to give Steam a major overhaul, but as long as they have a near monopoly they aren't going to bother, which is really bad for us since we will be stuck with a slow, outdated client forever. A more competitive, diverse market on the other hand will force Valve to improve Steam, which would make everyone happy.
That is why it is good to see developers like Paradox publishing their games on platforms like GOG Galaxy as well.
