Oh boy... the rule of two is one of the most idiotic plot device ever used, imo.

Well technically there was one good explanation for it; The Sith believed/concluded there is a limited amount of "The Force" in the Galaxy, due to the fact that there is a finite number of living things form which it is derived; therefore all that power must then be divided among all force users, and that wiping out others increases their share of the greater whole.
