So, I'm just rewatching the stream on youtube and at some point Quill said that Hyperdrive ships are so fast that they're almost impossible to catch! Even with wormhole tech which is also pretty fast.

Wow!

They should be, considering that it essentially dictates your expansion avenues, and since you have to travel along the lanes while warp or wormhole can strike you anywhere. With hyperlane only settings you could turtle and only defend chokepoints but that requires a game setting.

Lets you build a zoo that adds +10% happiness to that planet.

Edit: As long as you have the resource, it seems that you can build those zoos on other planets as well.

I thought that this must be the case, but I remember a thread way back where people claimed that Hyperdrive ships are easily ambushed, because they move on a predetermined path. But I just couldn't see it happening for 3 reasons.
1) The enemy has no idea which systems are connected, unless he also uses hyperlanes, or research.
2) Ships fitted with Hyperdrives are WAY faster than anything else.
3) Their cooldown is relatively fast and they don't have to be in the Outer Edges of a System in order to leave it. So, they also enter&exit systems faster than anyone else.

In any case, it will be interesting to see tomorrow how Quill will manage in a war with his neighbor, the Loreswarm bugs. ;)
It will be a fight of Wormholes vs Hyperlanes.

I thought it was happiness but I think I read studying them when he hovered over the tech which made me think society research?

I thought it was happiness but I think I read studying them when he hovered over the tech which made me think society research?

The actual tile had soc research (I think 3 soc units and 1 cat?). But it had a follow on tech that allows a zoo. The zoo can be built on any (only one?) planet that gives +10 happiness.

edit: Uppost says zoo has 1 cat for maintenance, so only one zoo per cat tile, I guess.

edit more: Since we're talking about the London multistream, I hope whoever is playing the Star Empire of Manticore doesn't hear about putting space cats in a zoo! That would quickly stop the alliance and make a rivalry :)

Fast to transit between systems. In-system this should depend on the hyperdrive ships' sublight engines. Maybe hyperdrive has a shorter cooldown timer than warp and wormhole FTL does?

Hyperdrive ships don't need to travel to the edge of the system to jump. Even if they have the same cool down timer as warp (wormhole cooldown works differently) it is still on average faster because it can instantaneously jump the moment it needs.

I thought it was a bit off-putting that he was complaining about the game he was given special access to at a special event to the developer's face in front of thousands of viewers. Really didn't give me a positive impression of the guy. The forums are supposed to be where you complain!;)

Hyperdrive ships don't need to travel to the edge of the system to jump. Even if they have the same cool down timer as warp (wormhole cooldown works differently) it is still on average faster because it can instantaneously jump the moment it needs.

Pretty neat seeing the differences. Hopefully during tomorrow's stream we'll get to see hyperdrives in action!
