Well lets be fair, 70% of his problems come from angering a FE and not exploring all the anomalies ;)

Also, it seems like he is not really far behind on ship tech, this is more an issue of a high number of players on a small Galaxy Map. So having a ship tech more can be pretty important.

He basically had a lot of bad luck with techs it seems, which can be one of the weak points of the "card deck system" they use.

He also selected a Tundra start in a failed attempt to collude with Quill. The dude will do anything for an advantage and when it fails.......

He basically had a lot of bad luck with techs it seems, which can be one of the weak points of the "card deck system" they use.

Not a weakness with the system, it's a weakness with his strategy. A good strategy is adaptive to changing circumstances and has multiple contingencies. Arumba sounded like he was counting too much on getting certain specific techs. With this type of tech system, that's very risky.

Lot of bad luck too. He was stuck on corvettes when others had cruiser tech due to the card not showing up.

I think a lot of other players are also stuck on corvettes. Like I said, an issue with the Galaxy being so small for so many players. In a "normal" game you would have more time to get the tech.

True, but his feedback was not about the FE. ;)

This is not the small Galaxy Map. They said it has1000 stars.

1000 stars for 22 player empires, some AI empires in the mix, fallen empires, and primitives and you're starting to talk about a pretty packed place.
I recall seeing even from the Blorg stream that on a Huge Galaxy (1000) there can be as many as 40 or 50 races without including the FEs.
The issue may be that most of them started clustered up together as you can even see from the stream. The Western part of the Galaxy is almost empty.

Can we choose if the startup
is clustered or not?

I thought that this must be the case, but I remember a thread way back where people claimed that Hyperdrive ships are easily ambushed, because they move on a predetermined path. But I just couldn't see it happening for 3 reasons.
1) The enemy has no idea which systems are connected, unless he also uses hyperlanes, or research.
An astute player can observe hyperlane neighbors' civilian ship pathing, though I suppose a cunning and cautious opponent can also mislead with ruses by purposely going the long way. Light skirmishes also will reveal hyperlane connectivity fairly quickly, so decisive engagement right off the bat is something I'd avoid initially when fighting against hyperlane empires.

2) Ships fitted with Hyperdrives are WAY faster than anything else.
Indeed, quill18 said hyperlane ships ran circles around his worm hole ships. Their "cooldown" mainly occurs during start-up, but I suspect that can be somewhat bypassed by using emergency yump to bug out quickly.

3) Their cooldown is relatively fast and they don't have to be in the Outer Edges of a System in order to leave it. So, they also enter&exit systems faster than anyone else.
The whole point of the ambush remarks was that opponents can figure out exactly where hyperlane ships must come from, so opponents can amass all of their ships near the borders for intercept.
