Stellaris is prohibitively slow in the middle-to-late game

While I'm not angry at Paradox for this performance issue (but given that the 2.2 MP game I'm doing with a friend is starting to run so slow that you can actually watch the battles in fastest like if they were in very slow in the early game might change my view on the subject) I'm very perplexed as to HOW this wasn't found out sooner, I mean like the bugs where the AI stopped building fleets from the mid game and onwards, or never upgraded buildings. It's like the devs did a ton of games where they just stopped in the early game, and did absolutely none where they actually got to mid game and end game.
